Funky House Sound

As a dj, I have been drawn to minor key stuff in progressive music. I then ventured into House music and fell in love with the funky sounds of Hott 22, Freemasons, Central Ave, etc.
I can produce progressive music but house is so much more difficult. Can we talk general terms here? What makes house house?

House is a feeling !!!
Sorry couldn't resist
Seriously, there's no "standard" chord progressions that could identify a track as house music.

I draw the line at power tools for the under 5's.

Like mentioned before theres no standard chord progression. But I'm pretty sure a large amount of deep house and funky house stuff uses 7th chords frequently. In fact staying with 7ths, moving around the circle of fifths and adding some half note steps with the root note now and then creates a sort of housy feel... at least in my ears =)

house is very wideraning.....covering many many different styles of music, infact id say its probably the most expansive genre theres a term for!
your talking about pretty much commercial house made for the charts loadsa vocals etc. but i suppose even thats got roots in some clubs, like most dance music you need to go cut your teeth get down some clubs find out what the whole scene is about then you will find out what people like and want....
theres no rules.

Absolutely. There's no way that the narrow scope of, say, classical or jazz can compete with the majesterial sweep of house.sergef50 wrote:house is very wideraning.....covering many many different styles of music, infact id say its probably the most expansive genre theres a term for!

Understand, though, that for a goodly number of electronic musicians, the musical rainbow goesnuffink wrote:Absolutely. House is hard to characterize. Funky house usualy uses big basslines to move it with stabs and one shots layed in over top. The hi-hats have a swing to them while slight timing variations characterize the kick and snare. The beats in house have a very rigid feel without being stiff. Congas Bongos and other percussion instruments fill out the ryththim section. The basses for funky house can be from any synth or sample. Sounds from the Moog modular and mini are popular as well as sounds from the roland Juno line of synths. The house piano sound from the Fm 7 also makes an appearence.
