I cant seem to shift some noise from my guitar signal so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas?

Im running my epiphone les paul special into a Line6 UX1 toneport direct into my PC.. I have the stock epiphone open coil humbuckers..

The guitar is not the source because I tried my bass and the noise is the same,
I unplugged both my monitors and plugged the PC into a board on its own and even into a different wall socket..no change....
I switched off all the lights in the house and unplugged a few appliances...

..still no change...

When I touch the strings it doesnt go away and the noise is still present when I play...
The sound is present even without distortion... Ive attached links to both clean and distorted sound files.(Im not playing in them sorry

)
In the distorted one I turn the volume knob up and down a few times.. the noise seems to get worse when the knob is at half way...

I used to be in a different room and the problem was there but not half as bad..,so im lost really..!!

I heard that active pickups eliminate this kind of noise so I might get a set of EMG's when I get the cash together..If all else fails that is...

any ideas or suggestions??!

Hi,

Not sure if the Electro Harmonix Hum Debugger pedal will help, but it might be worth a go. It's mainly aimed at cancelling that 60hz hum, which it excels at btw, and your noise sounds more like a dodgy earth connection to me.

Wrap yourself in aluminum foil.

[sounds like a pre-amp/gain issue to me]

I use a BOSS GL-100 as a pre-amp into a 1820m card and I have no noise like that at all, even without active pickups.

edit: To clarify, it sounds like you are amplifying your noise to signal ratio in even amounts. A hotter line will eliminate this usually. Also, some monitors have un-shielded cables that will do this as well.

..thanks for the tips guys...

I had my monitors unplugged during my test but the noise remained so its not them either...It does seem like a dodgy connection although my cables are in pretty good condition so i cant imagine them causing this much trouble...
anyway, i set my toneport UX1 up on my girlfriends PC in a different room and the noise isnt half as bad... Im beginning to think that its my PC itself that may be causing the interference.. Its one of those boxy shuttle type deals...

Let me see............

a. Without being there, I do not know what cables you have. Is there anyway to change them/a-b'em/etc?

b. It seems that the UBER problem is in one room? Can you please list what is in/on in the room? (and I mean ANYTHING that is on!!!!!!!)

c. It's probably not your pc.......HOWEVER, it could EASILY (and I mean easily) be what you have the power pluged into. Are you using a surge/protector? a wall-mart brand or something else?

d. Location of the line6 unit to ANY power source can make a huge difference. For example, when I was using a podxt live......I had to make certain that the power supply was NO WHERE NEAR the compter.......this would lead to TERRIBLE noise!

e. As a side note, these pickups are humbuckers.......no?

f. For the hell of it.....please list the pc components and how thing are laid out (yeah, it's reaching.........but maybe something will turn up?)

I tried a few different cables but always the same problem..

I already tried switching off and unplugging EVERYTHING in the room leaving just the PC on...and even then the PC was plugged directly into the wall...

The Toneport UX 1 doesnt have a power supply, it gets its power from the USB socket...

Yes, I have humbuckers..

I have a shuttle PC...
It only has one PCI slot so all I have are my graphics card and my audiophile 2496 soundcard...

My guess its from your computer and the line6 toneport. I would move you or your computer farther away when recording. The toneport is might be contributing noise too.

Also your guitar could have wiring faults - does the noise go away when you touch any of the knobs? I wouldn't bother with active pickups IMO. I have some emg's and they sound dry and sterile.
