Which samplers support host drag n drop?

Specifically, I'm looking for a sampler that can accept audio files dragged from the host's arrange page (or file browser, sample/file list, etc.) Apparently Mach Five V2 will have this feature according to MOTU, but I don't need half its capabilities.

Some of them were listed in this thread from a few months ago:

Oh yeah I forgot about that thread... Just reminded me how all the naysayers try and tell us samplists our needs have been met :dog: :uhuhuh: and we're just oblivious.

So anyway, here's what I gathered:

FL Edison -> Directwave
Wavelab -> Halion
pHATmatik Pro -> any host (does this still work?)
??? Mach Five <-> any host ???

Sad state of affairs...

We should be happy because we don't make real music any way.

Good times.

Oh yeah and Live <-> Impulse/Simpler/Sampler

That appears to be it. I think in-host drag and drop worked with Battery 2, but it's something that is missing in v3.

I think that new Digidesign sampler will integrate extensively with Protools, I have a vague memory of someone saying that you'll be able to drag things back and forth between tracks and the sampler.

trusty old Vsampler allows for drag and drop samples. What would be amazing tho is if you could d&d whole folders as instruments! Think of the time you'd save!

To/from the host?

Yeah my partner confirmed drag n drop support between Structure and and the Edit window.

Just tested it.. From the host only.. :(

Have you considered using a VST browser like MIDIview or TACKYBROWSER?

I think dragging from the host to the plugin will typically be an issue because in all likelyhood the clip data from a host is not in some stadard audioformat. The audio is probably within some larger container which has info specific to the host (does the clip have fades on it, is it reversed, what's the clip size even tho non destructively it might be bigger, etc).. and every host will handle this a different way. Just a wild guess tho... ;)

That's actually awesome! Which host did you test?

Oh I've got plenty of browsers (AudioFinder is the best, bar none), that's not the problem. The issue here is immediacy and fluidity of workflow, and its clash with the file-based softsampler paradigm. You'd really have to be a samplist to understand. But the basic rundown is:

1. Using several disjointed apps to do what you could do with one hardware sampler and one unified interface is not creativity-conducive.

2. Host <-> Sampler drag n drop is a great way to alleviate that:

record something, drag it to the sampler, autochop, automap, compose. That's the organic workflow that's mostly missing from software samplers. And the reason I still prefer my ASR-X to (the vastly superior in every other area) Battery 3.

Trust me I know how you feel. If it were up to me it would all be a seamless process of dragging, dropping, proceesing, dragging, dropping, playing etc. I think in some cases it has to do with the developer not wanting you to go elsewere but in their particular app. Which ofcourse makes it a PITA.. I guess the key is to find the simplest and quickest way to work and just stick to it. I my own experience I've had to go as far as automating certain processes with AHK. There are some real upsides to using automation software. Maybe take a look see? :shrug:

What you describe has pushed me away from every sampler/slicer vst I own (even making me question a slicer I've been trying to develop). There is very few with real sampling facilities. Record into it, then work the sampler. Drag n' drop would be even better, but I think host -> VST will always present an issue (see my above comment).

It's recently got me so fed up, that I've returned to tracking (renoise) some 13 years later. The main reasons being... I can record straight into it, edit samples, chop samples (not automatically, but it's fairly easy, or you can use sample offsets), map, destructively apply effects, resample sequences to new sample slots, etc... all within a single integrated environment which you can get around with hardly the need of a mouse. It's the closest in feel to hardware (even tho it's definitely different). However, it requires one to embrace the tracker methodology and that's just not everyone's cup of tea unfortunately (or fortunately :hihi:).

This isn't to plug tracking, but to say I share your frustration. Developers have the knowledge to make this happen, but for whatever reason refuse to step up. Strange. :?
