I will check out the Cort. Can someone explain to me why the PRS Soapbar pickups sound so different than the Strat ones?

I was recently given a Mexican Fender Telecaster ... it plays and sounds great.

They're just fundamentally different pickups. A soapbar is a P-90, which is just one of the archetypal pickups... the way the coil is wound and the kind of magnets used makes it a totally different pickup from a strat-style single-coil.

Well, "totally" different insofar as guitar pickups sound different from one another.

You're in single-coil territory still, but it's a different beast. Even telecaster single-coils sound different from stratocaster single-coils, and they're more similar to each other than a P-90 is.

I see. I guess I just never knew about P-90's before, and thought all single coils were of the Strat variety. I did check out the Mexican Fender Telecaster, but the Tele sound just isn't for me... too twangy. No, the more I think about it, the more I liked the PRS. I'm going back to the store on Tuesday with my friend so I can get a more informed second opinion, but I will check out the Cort as well.

I normally would go with anything else besides Ovation but this sounds good for an acoustic/electric under a grand.

The biggest concern I have with the Variax is the latency. I'm really just looking for a good old fashioned electric guitar. I have a myriad of sound shaping techniques at my disposal, but what I don't have is a decent guitar.

I had been thinking a little about the Godin Freeway SA with the Ghost system, but like I said, for now I want to focus more on my basic guitar playing. Getting into guitar synth playing would likely end up being a distraction from trying to improve my technique. For the same reason, I've resisted buying an Ebow for years, even though I'm sure it would be a lot of fun.

Thanks for the Ovation tip, but I actually already have an extremely nice Martin acoustic which is on permanent loan from my mom. Shhh... Don't remind her!

Godin makes great guitars. I have an LG with P-90s that I got for $300 (used).

PRS's most famous player probably is Carlos Santana. As we know, he has gorgeous tone. How much of that is in his fingers and the rest of his signal chain, I don't know. But the guitars have always been stunning to look at. I've always lusted after one, but the Santana-level ones are pretty expensive custom machines.

Almost all of it's his hands. Listen to his Woodstock set (SG/Twin Reverb), Abraxas (LP and Strat/one of the first Boogies) and today (PRS and same amp as the Abraxas days). There isn't much difference at all...

I find Santana's tone to be too compressed. But that's just me. My favourite PRS player is David Grissom. He's been with them since forever... he had a gold-top back in the day that was simply awesome. I'm sure I could dig up an old copy of Guitar Player if I visit my parents' place.

My favourite budget PRS just came to my attention recently. It's not in their current lineup, but check this out:

No fancy maple top. Single-coil pickups (this particular one is being sold by a member of another forum, and he's put in some Fender noiseless pickups). Tortoise-shell which I normally hate. But somehow, this thing is simply awesome. If anyone wants to buy this particular one, it's $300 including the gig bag. Don't think it's up for auction yet, so I dunno how much shipping would be. The seller is in the States. By coincidence, he has a gold-top, too. Must have similar tastes.

Not really. I mean... it does some processing, so there's got to be some scientifically measurable latency. But not in a way that a human's perceptions would pick up on.
