Hey Jones,

What about Ableton's Sampler? Good/bad for you? Although I can see that if you use multiple hosts, you'd want something portable.

Abe's Sampler is good for what it does, but its limiting for samplists, because the envelopes/filters/modulators are attached to the entire program, and can't be edited individually for each sample.

This is true, but the Rack system in Live makes it quite easy to make up separate voices within one Rack patch.

Before I got Sampler I made up quite a few multiple voice sample sets with a bank of Simplers.

I've been looking at racks as a possible working solution... only problem is setup time. Maybe I'll try setting up some racks as sort of templates...

still recommended, also for its drag 'n drop workflow*:
http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=21 (DR-008)

* Drag& Drop single and multiple samples or presets from the built-in 'tree-view' browser, or directly from Windows Explorer.

Sorry, don't mean to nitpick, but DR-008 does not actually do *host* sample drag and drop. "Host" drag and drop means that you can make a sample selection in the VST host, then drag/drop that selection into the VSTi as a sample.

So far, only the following softsampler VSTi's can do this (at least from the host to the VSTi) AFAIK:

1. MOTU Mach 5
2. 112db's "Morgana"
3. Image Line DirectWave
4. Emu Emulator X (?? maybe)

Any others?

 yea I know the difference - that's why I added the asterisk. But since the OP asked for drag 'n drop from the host's file browser (and I'm very familiar with that since I use REAPER :D) I reckon DR-008 provides the same workflow (or even better, since you won't need to open a host's file browser window to browse your sample files... 8) ) +1 for the goold old DR-008!
