No, and that's the point. The original sounds different.

@Subz - I'm sure one can create that sound on pretty much any synth with basic unison, 12dB lowpass filters and almost linear env slopes.

I managed to compare the Virus TI recently with a Voyager and the Virus was actually very nice and if I had the money I would buy one but it didn't sound like real hardware (i.e. the Voyager) - it is no more real hardware than a PC is (it's just a good quality Cubic Zirconia to extend the image). What I liked most about the Virus was the range of sounds it produced and the lush quality of some of the pads and leads (though I still prefer the Nord Lead sound for leads and my favourite lead synth is actually the ProOne replica made by John Bowen for Creamware - it has better sounding filters than the Virus actually as well).

Ironically, although the Voyager is without doubt "real" hardware in the sense that it's not just software running on a chip in a keyboard shell, I was surprised by the cheap quality of some of the switches on it - a couple didn't even line up right, and the XY pad had a horrible rubbery feel that made it impossible to play and uncomfortable to touch (nowhere near as good as the one on my V-Synth) - probably gets dirty easily as well. The screen was also cheap looking and pretty naff. The screen and build quality of synths like the Virus and V-Synth are far better. I've never played a real MiniMoog so I wonder how they compare.

I think this nails the discussion pretty well. I read recently that a guy spent 6 years trying to recreate moog sounds with VAs. The moment he got a moog, it took him 3 seconds :)

I think this is where it's at. You can make great music with anything. but if you want those sounds, you got to get the gear that makes them.

But again, you can make great music with VSTs alone. Maybe just not *that* kind of music.

I just heard the lame virus arp that people are trying to recreate. Well, the sound really sucks and if i was looking for those sounds alone I'd say that most softsynths would do. What the virus gives you is a very smooth tone in many settings. Most VSTs I've tried also sound good but the sweet spot is way narrower. If you start abusing of the sound it'll start hurting your ears after a while. Now, imo this is not a problem with softsynths only. Many other hardware VAs also suffer from this (waldorfs come to mind) but some people actually learned to like them.

What I like about the virus is that somehow is sounds good almost all the time. The results is musical even in some extreme settings. And imo, that is a sign of a good instrument.

here's some sounds I tweaked out of the TI a while ago. I got better at it but you can see that even pushing the modulations that sound is always nice and warm and rarely goes into digital harsh territory.

If this thread was a girl I'd have the biggest boner ever.

_pix_: I've been playing your audio for quite some time (still playing) and forgot I'm listening to some sound examples you made :) some really great sound design, and relaxing :).

Could the length of time this thread and other Virus threads have gone on suggest that a lucrative path for any VSTi developer is to produce a native VSTi that can read Virus sysex and sound close to the real thing? :D

Hey guys

The number of pages makes me think why this matrter is so interesting to discuss.

If there are any veterans here, I am truly impressed.

Once saw two kids of two different mother clinging each to their own saying "MY mama".

And this MY seemed to be in opposition to what the other onew said about HIS "my".

I hope I am being clear ;)
