Prophet 8!

Well, I doubt anyone saw that coming... A brand new Prophet synth from Dave Smith Instruments! And it doesn't seem to be a lame Roland-like "lets stick a classic name on something so it sells better" either but the real freaking deal... 8 voices, fully analog, patch memory, sequencer, arp...

Much less than I have invested into my own Prophet-5...and it gets you three more voices, to boot. I can't imagine, though, that they are going to attempt to recreate the P-5 (they'd never be able to please all those people who claim to hear every tiny difference between old analogs)...just resurrect the lineage for new and "modern" descendants. Definitely worth watching out for...hifiboom wrote:2000 for an 8 analog voice prophet.
dirt cheap.

True! Though (herecy!) I had a custom curly maple cabinet made for mine by Analogics, who also did a great job restoring the whole thing:hifiboom wrote:yeah on the other hand that old prophet is really a great piece of gear with that nice wood.

If I would have more money lying around I would collect those old pieces.
They likely go up than down in price and worth.
not talking about its great melo sound...

They aren't getting any less scarce, that's for sure. However, the introduction of a new product like this from Dave Smith is good news, simply because, let's face it, the upkeep on these old beasties is not inexpensive. And eventually, no matter how much time and money we sink into keeping these working, they will eventually die. They were never designed to last as long as they have. Thank goodness there is someone like Wes Taggart around to take care of them! He just finished restoring my Minimoog and building the same kind of case for it. I can't wait to get it back home and have a jam with it!hifiboom wrote:great.

Poor fella. He didn't know that you actually have to maintain these old dears. Get thee to Analogics, my good man!jens wrote:

I never saw any ground leaking out of it...
Anyway, although I'm sure it and I will become like brothers over the next few months, as you will see day 1 hasn't gone quite so well...

yeah I think so too.
an concering the sound of analog gear is by far not obsolete altough the trendline is towards doing everything digital.
I read a german interview of a well known actor and she said if everyone uses the same tools (in this case she talked about software stuff) they all will sound the same.
I think this is a valuable argument.
Varity in gear and differences in workflow is the key for your "own sound signature" imo.

Then he needs better service techs. But really, you've hit on the caveat of vintage gear that a lot of would-be analog apologists don't seem to deal with: they need a lot of care. As I said, these things were never meant to last as long as they have. On the other hand, it's ridiculous to make an "analog vs digital" comparison using one broken specimen. I have lots of analogue stuff that works great and I have lots of digital stuff that doesn't work great. And vice versa.jens wrote:Scot Solida wrote:Poor fella. Damn... Thinking about the Prophet 8, only one thing comes to mind: I'm totally out of space in my studio!
I've already weeded out all the "lesser" keyboards, and there just isn't room for one more.
Well, actually, I do have a 15 foot tall ceiling, so I guess I could keep adding space vertically. I just need keyboard racks up to the roof, and a rolling library ladder so I can climb up and play them.
Oh well, I suppose its a sign that I need to stop buying gear and start using what I've got. Either that or its a sign that I need to expand into the master bedroom. I'm sure my wife won't mind...

Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.
