Hi
Have on a budget situation and I don't have a ton of money to spend... so I went to my local reseller and I ask in a budget system for vocal recording: I came out with a Tapco Link.USB and a Behringer c-3 cardioid condenser mic. I have set up a pop filter and the voice comes out nicely as I like, but I have noticed that I have to push quite a bit the gain of the lin.usb preamp to get a sound that is loud enough (max around -10db). The more I apply gain more noise I get into the recording that hopefully I can eliminate in processing in the DAW.
Should a dedicated preamp solve this problem of noise? If yes should I buy which one? Should I move to a quality mixer like the mackie 1202 VLZ series, combining a mixer a quality build-in preamp?
Thanks a lot for the replies
Pedro

On a budget: M-Audio DMP3
Bit more to spend: FMR RNP, True P-Solo, Grace 101
Even with a good pre you'd still be stuck with a shit mic, though. As the saying goes, your recordings will only be as good as the weakest link in the chain.
