I've been trying for so long to capture the sound and feel of this bassline: http://www.gmediamusic.com/gforce/Strin ... 0Bliss.mp3

It's a GMedia's VSM demo. The bassline was Minimonsta.

I don't have Minimonsta, and I already have quite a few synths already so I don't want to spend more just for this bassline.

The problem is, no matter how I try, I cannot capture its sound and its feel. I think the bassline has just right amount of fatness, smooth legato feel, with a hint of growl and silkiness. I don't really know how to express it. It's just real sweet.

I've tried with Zebra 2, VAZ 2010, and CS-80V. None can really get to the point I'm satisfied. It's either too muddy or too aggressive. And the rubbery smoothness when playing legato is far off. It sounds like it should be easy, but then I think it depends a lot on the character of the filter. That makes it hard to replicate, I think.

Can anyone offer me an advice on how to recreate this on one of the synths listed above? (FYI, I also have Sytrus, impOSCar, and Oddity, but I think these are even more far off.)

BTW, some part of the bassline sounds like there's pitchbending in action. Is it really pitchbending or is it just portamento in legato play?

Nice bass. The whole demo sounds a bit like Reason 3's default choon. I guess you've used your 20 hrs of Minimonsta, like? I wonder if Bass Station has a demo. Sorry I couldn't help with the sound design, I'm sorta just getting to know synthesis.

Yup, my demo period for Minimonsta is still available. With all the synths I have now, I shouldn't need to buy more. But that sound just keeps going on in my head, and it's really frustrating that I cannot get it out of what I have.

sounds like a sq, and a a pulse, definately a 24 decibal lowpass, with lots of q... a slow lfo heavy attack, probably a slow decay and a quick sustain and a moderate realease. also a touch of pre filter disto. sounds like it been ulta compressed probably from inside the synth, and also sounds like it got compressed again from outside the synth and had tons of make up gain, probably had a final eq that was super high around 600.... I think its to oscillaters, I wanna say sq and pulse, or sq and sine

This baasline is made with 2 Osc's (unison)using the sawtooth wave. Run this to a Low Pass Filter with no
Resonance. The filter is modulated by the Envelope
Generator(ADSR). The Pitch is not modulated by Pitch
Bend, but the keyboard has to be set to Portamento.
So, in this case, the Hold of the ADSR is important.
That must be set around 70/80 persent. Hope this helps.

did you make the bassline? dont you think a saw would have a bit more harmonic... and unison? how are you getting that, it sounds poly? but I could be wrong... cause I am not pro sound designer, I think its a sq and pulse...

By the way, I think the bassline uses only 1 saw oscillator. It doesn't sound hollow the way square sounds, and it doesn't sound big the way 2 detuned saws sound, but it does sound fat and warm.

Perhaps it's just me, but Zebra 2 with XMF sounds a bit too aggressive. The closest so far is, to my surprise, CS-80V. With 1 oscillator and a sine added in for more warmth, it gets much closer. It's a bit fiddly to program a monophonic bass on it though.

yes, I agree, any use of a Saw wav is not going to help recreat that bassline, because the sound will be too aggressive....

Try a sq and a pulse.... and yeah, its not unison detune, its poly... I really think its a sq and a pulse or a sq and a sine... its a sq... least to say.... I could be wrong... but a saw is gonna sound harsher...

Ah, what wave form are you using, A saw? Have you Tried with a sq and Pulse?

I bet its very easily done on Zebra... but definately not with a Saw....
