first off, what is your budget?

second, I dont understand what you mean by "just for sub" Are you talking about a backup? If so then you probably dont need it in a studio environment.

A little more information please and I'll try to recommend something.

yeah.. sorry.. i didn't mention my budget & others..
my budget is up to $1,000 for mic & mic pre & compressor(or channel strip)
i have soundcraft compact4, audiophile192
'just for sub' means i can use it if sonething wrong with main mic pre...yeah for backup
i'd like to use s/pdif out if the mic pre 's supported it..
i prefer a channel strip to a separated combination.....
thx...

Ok, sorry it took me a bit to get back to you. I'll start with a disclaimer. You really should try any microphone with your own voice before you buy it if possible. That is the only way to know for certain that it will work for you.

That said, if I were recording someone with a voice as you described on your budget, the first mic I would try would be an Electrovoice RE-20. It is a large diaphragm dynamic mic, but it really shines on deep voices and bass instruments. It can be had for under $300 used most of the time. It's a quality mic and one that you will probably still keep and use long after you've outgrown cheap entry level condensers. Another thing I might try if the EV didnt work would be an AT4047. It can be had for around $400 usually, shop around. It is an excellent all around mic, but I have found it to be very useful in particular for vocal chores.

As for a preamp, most of the budget preamps are not going to be significantly better than your little soundcraft mixer. It is a very usable little unit. Instead of using money on a backup, I would just use it as your backup. Hopefully you will never have to use it. Of the preamps that you listed, The Grace and the P-Solo are probably the best sounding though very clean, but the Tampa definitely has a usable sound and it has all the other channel strip features that you want. It has digital out through S/PDIF and also a variable impedance control which can be very cool on some mics.

Another suggestion might be a used Presonus VXP it is a step up as far as preamp quality from the Tampa and it also has all the channel strip functions you might need. It can be had for around $400 used. There is an optional digital output card for it, but that might put you over budget. It is a very nice preamp though. It's my current favorite for vocals.

Anyway, I hope that some of this helps. Good luck on your search.
