I currently use a Soundblaster Audigy-2 ZS soundcard which works quite well and gives me good (4ms) latency.
However, I do not have a low-impedance microphone input, and so far have not been able to input vocals into tracks. (The Audigy does have a mic input but the input plug is the size of a mini-headphone jack.)
So my question is this: If I purchase a decent microphone preamp and run that into my line input, will that suffice or must I necessarily replace my soundcard with one that has a dedicated mic input? Since otherwise I have no problems with the Audigy-2, I'd like to stay with it if at all possible unless running a mic preamp into the line input is a bad idea.
Thanks to all for any help

...you can conect a dinamic mic with an plug/miniplug adapter, but I guess you'll better of with a dedicated preamp conected to the line input, I'd buy one with phantom power option to conect condensers, and a tube for warmth.

there is the m audio pre mobile usb preamp.
you just plug it in via usb and its got a full size mic input.
and then you can just plug in any condenser mic in.
this is the setup i might go for, as it might save money on buying a new soundcard, and also it seems easy way of doing it.
