Kick with high metallic tone to it

Hi,

could anyone indicate how to create a basskick with a high metallic sound to it? I do have one (that I uploaded to KVR under the name 'metallic Front242-type Kick' / Front-bank), but I would like to create them myself in order to be able to tweak the sound more precisely. I assume I need to add high resonance kick or anything of that kind, but fumbling around did not generate what I wanted.

Try aliased sample rate reduction (typically using a bitcrusher-type plugin) or adding some ring modulation (not 100% wet).

Strike a 12 inch frying pan with a leather mallet and mix the sample with the kick. You might need to pitch shift the sample down some for the best blend.

I hang the pan from the handle if I want more more ring and sustain, and fine tune the decay with an envelope so the pan attack blends nicely into the kick. Use a high quality large capsule condenser mic to capture a wide frequency sound. The AKG 414 is a personal favorite.

Why the leather mallet?

A regular forged metal hammer makes the pan sound difficult to sit correctly with the kick...the attack is too sharp, and...well...metallic.

thanks for the replies. I fried the trying pan, but that did not work as I would have hoped. Downloading 'Rhythms BD' from Odo Synths and tweaking the 'short' preset did the trick. Recording the frying pan with the leather mallet did generate some interesting sounds that I will be using in my production after all.
