High School Marching band drums, where do you find them? I'm looking for some high quality loops but despite using the google search trick and standard searches have turned up nothing. Any ideas??

Here's hoping!!

Thanks

S :)

Try searching for "drum line" and see if you get better results. I know that someone who frequents KVR sells a drum line sample set, but can't recall who. Will post if my cloudy memory clears up.

I'm thinking the same CD Meffy is, I've seen it, but I haven't found it yet... "drumline" was the magic Google word.

Here it is: http://www.tapspace.com/vdl2/index.html ... I see V.1 (just samples) has been discontinued and V.2 is wrapped in a Kontakt player (comparison here).

Garritan also has a Marching Band instrument coming real soon (was supposed to be out in June or July) - http://www.garritan.com/band.html - and some of the drum instruments are from the Tapspace collection noted above. Another Kontakt instrument.

Hi scoobz,
If you're looking for hi-quality loops on the web, it may be tough.
Last time I did a serious search, i found that most of the really good recordings are not really out there for looping purposes, and at the time, any *real* performance recordings were quite pricey... Admittedly, it's been a number of years since I've looked for such and when I finally found a (long since extinct) website that had some taped practices and parking lot drills from a few DCI corps in the late 90's I was quite happy! I liked the lofi boom box recordings, but that obviously won't suit everyone's purposes
While they don't sell loops per se- you can find full corp performances on DVD and CD HERE and you may want to expand your searches on google and wiki for "DCI" and/or "Drum Corp International".
I still love this stuff. If you've never seen a corp competition in person and you get a chance- check it out. :-o

Thanks guys, that's given me alot to go on, the search continues! ;)

g'luck, scoobz! Let us know if you have any success in finding loops of drum line stuff...while I've got the NI Battery 3 library which has a really nice set of marching band drums and I am gonna look at the Garritan Marching Band thing when that comes out... there IS something about grabbing loops of genuine HS or DCI drumline performances. Way cool stuff!

Post

Hey scoobz,

I see others have covered the software side of things pretty well. I own battery 3 and like the marching percussion set in there a lot.

You may already know about these, but there are a couple of forums specifically devoted to the "marching arts."

http://www.marchingbandplanet.com/
http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/

I think you're more likely to find folks who have made loops over there. You might also find folks there who are willing to make loops for you, though I think products like tapspace are geared towards percussion arrangers who write for marching bands and drum and bugle corps - i.e. people who get paid for writing.

You probably also know that there are tons of drumline vids on the internet. Here are a couple recent and good examples IMO.

Unfortunately it's illegal to sample from these, but they may prove inspirational in some other way. :-)

Good luck in your search.

Lots of good info in this thread; thanks for starting it. :) My temptation has been to hang on for the Garritan package -- which, IIRC, was originally due out last December? If it's up to the usual Garritan standard it should be pretty awesome.

If the drums are for some reason a weak factor, then I'll get tempted by the tapspace package, I suspect. It is pretty comprehensive, judging by the demos. And until now, I wasn't even aware of it!

Yeah, I just love the energy of the loops and if you can find a really tight troop the 32nd rolls are amazing. Thanks again for the input, yes you're right ecam on my travels I found many groups and the winners of the national competition who were amazing. I also saw the Cds android and the Phantom Regiment were the best! Gonna write to them and ask if I can have a recording of their Regiment (dunno how recpetive they'll be, as I wouldn't want to use their patterns just the induvidual hits and rolls)Keep em crossed for me.
Thanks again for all the input

Until you find what exactly you're looking for, you might want to try a couple of different tacks.

Scottish Pipe band loops can be found in several Celtic instrument/loop collections, and it's no problem to get those to jive with Drumline-type stuff and Marching Band music, with a little work.

There's a free soundfont over at www.sf2midi.com called "Celtix" something or another. It has lots of Breton instruments, including various Breton snare and bass drums, and a buncha different single hits, various stroke rolls and flams. Pretty easy to make your own loops.

Just a suggestion.

Most of the drums in the Garritan package will actually be from Tapspace Virtual Drumline 2.

Check the note below the instrument listing

Correct. Well, let's hope that Garritan moves this release along a little more swiftly. :hyper:
