Triggering samples live with percussion pad

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone here can help me with this.

During a live performance of a song I need to trigger a few, somewhat lengthy, samples. I'm the chosen one to do this in the band because, A: I'm the only one with any MIDI or computer related experience, and B: I'm also the drummer so it makes sense that I trigger these samples. I'd also like to be able to make this work without having to purchase any new hardware. I will purchase software if I can find something that will do the trick. I already have enough crap to cart around to gigs, and software doesn't weigh anything...

I have the following hardware (that I can use live):
. Roland SPD-11 percussion pad
. Windows based laptop with decent horsepower
. M-Audio FastTrack Pro

I can play to a click without wavering, and I usually monitor with in-ears or cans.

The samples are several bars in length. I could also create these parts with a soft-synth and play them in a sequencer but I prefer the samples a they were created by the band members.

I would like to be able to assign single pads to individual samples, and have any velocity 'hit' of a given pad trigger it's associated sample at a pre-set volume. If possible I'd also like a second hit on the pad to stop the sample and re-set it to the start, where another hit would start it over again.

Does anyone know if a software package exists that will allow me to do this? Can Ableton Live handle this? If so, I already have Live Lite 6.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

You should be able to do this in Live. You can assign individual pads to trigger any clip you want to play in the session view. I think there's a way to stop the clip with a second hit too, but can't remember how to do it ... there was a good article in Sound On Sound last month, about Creative Clip Launching in Live6, which may help you. You can download it from their website.

thanks, much appreciated. any other suggestions out there?

you could do this in basically any drum sampler (like battery or, much cheaper, DK+: http://nusofting.liqihsynth.com/DKplus_ ... _Drums.htm) when you assign all the samples to a mute group. this only works with a standard drum sampler if you don't need to snyc to variable tempo, otherwise you would better choose a solution like live or cakewalk project5 (which is now available for just 99 USD).

Thanks for the suggestions. Much appreciated. Started mucking about with Live over the weekend and will check out out DK+, etc, shortly.

Cheers.
