i just thought it was worth a notice how everyone went 'holy shit' when this was released, and now nobody's talking about it, kinda like 'OMG, that's my secret weapon, gotta keep this thing hush...'

I continue to praise it in various threads where it's relevant
. Let's praise it in here some more.
Along with the amazing Sonalksis DQ1 equalizer which I use a lot in pretty much anything nowadays, it's my most used compressor for either subtle or powerful compression. Heck, tell me you would have guessed the drums here are from DKS Pro
.
Funnily, it's a part of the Sonalksis "creative elements" bundle, and they also have an "essentials" bundle, but I find that DQ1, SV315 Mk2 and TBK3 are all equally, remarkably essential for me
. Really great stuff, I'm happy.

I've been messing around with it more and more. I had not been too impressed compared to the 315 compressor. But, after a bit of time with it, I can find a lot of uses for it. The real key, at least for me, was setting the input level correctly. With most of the tracks I tried it on, the incoming level was too low, so I boosted the compression dial. That gave less than desired results. That dial gets kind of funky near the top. By boosting the input a bit, I was able to get some nice results. I've used it mainly on drums (individual) and occasionally I try it on bass. I like the concept of it. I still think I need to play with it more before it makes a permanent home on stuff I produce for clients. I still prefer the clarity and openness of the 315. I know, they were made to sound different. It's just my preference. BTW, I do mostly acoustic music. I'm sure guys who work on more industrial music would love the way the TB3 works. It can go from fairly subtle to totally insane.

yes, it can get fairly subtle?
i havent got this in my demo period
you say more input and less compression. ok.
have you deactivated the limiter in your subtle compression trials?

My demo has run out long time ago as well. It is still on my "to buy" list as it's sound is unique. I can not make any of my other compressors sound like TBK3, unfortunately. Someday I'll get around to buy this thing but right now I'm more interested in the Sonalksis multiband limiter thingy that is supposedly being worked on! Come on Dave & Co, work damn it! Work! Harder! Faster! Bring us new toys! Work work!

I must say that I really like the TBK3, and I use it quite a bit to dirty things up. Also, I find it's great for parallel compression, especially of the drum bus. Can make the drums really fat sounding.
If you need detail conrol of input level, why not put a FreeG before the TBK3. That's something I find myself doing quite a bit. (both to lower the input to the TBK3, and to increase the input to the TBK, so get some nice driven filter sounds... =) )
