portishead is as jazzy as jazzanova. To me, that shit is called Acid JAZzz. All the chords, drums styles, singing styles are all from jazz, combined with psychedelic hiphop, which is acid jazz. Trip hop has just a harder style in my opinion. It's a close call though. If you don't like my opinion f**k you! You can't say it's "wrong."

This would be portishead-loungy, jazzy acid jazz.

Now this is trip hop, hard, trippy, very hiphop.

Now it's true portishead may have shit that sounds close to trip hop shit, close enough to mix in, but most of portishead's shit is all about that loungy singer. Overall, there music is jazzy and longy. Just a f**king opinion.

all i know is I seen portishea dplay 3 or 4 times and each time there was a jazz muscian setup with rhodes and the singer and a sound man.

When I saw antipop consortium they were dressed in weird Japanese NOH theatre costumes and had their faces painted and were doing all this crazy shit live with samplers and effects. To me that's trip hop.

So portishead (in your opinion) most definately aren't trip hop, but APC (in your opinion) most definately are?
M'kay, not that I care, I likes 'em both & don't really care how they are labeled.
How would you define / label Mike Ladd (for instance)?

just because the genre has moved on to encompass new sounds and such doesnt mean the original artists of a genre are no longer part of the genre they helped create.

first of all, beans and those fools been doin that YEARS before portishead foo, along with dozens of others, INCLUDING shadow n others, playing it out live.

Magazine writers and media have stamped this name onto portishead without really giving thought or credit to the REAL meaning of the word. I just think a lot of people out there don't understand that.

But I do agree with you, in the sense that portishead incorporates trip hop into their music, but they did not forge the style it was going strong long before.

Genre Angst! Trip-Hop: Only its hairdresser knows for sure!
