you have stamped this name onto certain acts without really giving thought or credit to the fact that the words trip hop have no REAL meaning. I just think you dont understand that.

Here's an idea: chop, mutlilate, mangle, and loop a bunch of Jimmy Buffett stuff - add a truckload of cheesy dance synth crap and call it Flip-Flop. Run with it!

basically it's like this: Portishead pulls it's influence straight from jazz and makes it trippy; hence the name "acid jazz" and maybe one would say "lounge" because of the singing and maybe "downtempo," well because of the tempo.

But real "trip hop" is more hip hop oriented, and pulls it's influence from hip hop, and makes that trippy, hence the name "trip hop." Now, a lot of people would argue that hiphop and jazz are the same but they are not. The whole feel of hiphop is it's own groove, beleive it or not.

I don't have time to get into it but let's just say that hiphop has a more upbeat feel like somewhere aroung 90 bpm and above, and more "bounce" not so sluggish.

Some would say "abstract" but that's as vague as "alternative."

In any case, the only reason why I'm typing this is because I know nobody on the internet really knows this because most people involved in hiphop are not the type to ever write a damn wikipedia article or speak up to forum junkies.

In other words, you can't just listen to a few portishead albums and think you know what trip hop is, you can't read a popular media about hiphop/trip hop and expect to have the truth, you can't take a class at college and get a degree in triphop or hiphopology, you have to listen to the real shit deeper than the popular name and then you'll have the real simple meaning and technique that you're looking for.

But I guess you might have a different opinion, and that's cool.

It is my opinion that telling someone who wants to make trip hop to listen to portishead is like telling someone to go to el pollo loco to understand how to cook mexican food.

It takes real skill to get three mods LOLing at once. Well done.

Yeah, you imbeciles. Just because everyone in the world things of Portishead not merely as a trip hop act but as one of the acts who defined trip hop doesn't mean that's the real meaning of trip hop.

Post

so goldie makes a track with krs one and he's hiphop now. Portishead does a gravediggaz rmx and now they're DEFINING triphop, that's f**ked up, no matter how much you try and make fun of me.

taco bell helped to define what the world sees as authentic mexican food.

How to put this simply...

Trip hop is not something defined by God on tablets of stone or something. It's a genre name. It's a term that people use to refer to a particular sort of music. If everyone started refering to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest as trip hop, then they would be. If everyone decides to refer to DJ Krush and DJ Vadim and whoever else as Stevecore then they're stevecore. And if everybody considers Portishead and the bristol sound to be trip hop, then that's what they are. IT IS ONLY WORDS.

Mexican food is not something defined by God on tablets of stone or something. It's a food genre name. It's a term that people use to refer to a particular sort of food. If everyone started refering to MAcdonalds and Jack In the Box as Mexican Food, then they would be. If everyone decides to refer to Agave Restauran and Itozan Cafe and whoever else as Steve's Restaurant then they're Steve's Restaurant. And if everybody considers Taco Bell and the mexican pizza taste to be Mexican Food, then that's what they are. IT IS ONLY WORDS.

"Mexican food" has the quite specific and well defined meaning based on the words 'Mexican' and 'food': "food originating in Mexico." If we start referring to chicken chow mein as mexican food, it results in Confusion.

'Trip hop' doesn't have any particularly specific meaning based on the words 'trip' and 'hop'. It just means what people understand by it.
It's a rave, Lewis!
