Trip hop is not something defined by God on tablets of stone or something. It's a genre name. It's a term that people use to refer to a particular sort of music. If everyone started refering to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest as trip hop, then they would be. If everyone decides to refer to DJ Krush and DJ Vadim and whoever else as Stevecore then they're stevecore. And if everybody considers Portishead and the bristol sound to be trip hop, then that's what they are. IT IS ONLY WORDS.
Mexican food is not something defined by God on tablets of stone or something. It's a food genre name. It's a term that people use to refer to a particular sort of food. If everyone started refering to MAcdonalds and Jack In the Box as Mexican Food, then they would be. If everyone decides to refer to Agave Restauran and Itozan Cafe and whoever else as Steve's Restaurant then they're Steve's Restaurant. And if everybody considers Taco Bell and the mexican pizza taste to be Mexican Food, then that's what they are. IT IS ONLY WORDS.
I rewrote it:)
Nevertheless, I can still voice my opinion, even though you think some condecending shit about me it's cool.
One more version
A well designed software is not something defined by God on tablets of stone or something. It's a descriptive name. It's a term that people use to refer to a particular sort of plug in. If everyone started refering to Pro Tools and Logic as well designed, then they would be. If everyone decides to refer to Avid and Adobe and whoever else as the top choice software then they're the top choice of software. And if everybody considers Pro Tools and the M-audio taste to be well designed software, then that's what they are. IT IS ONLY WORDS.

Actually, that's what I had in mind particularly when I posted. The variety and depth of sounds on that album goes so far beyond the trip hop 'slowed down breaks, hammond, double bass, willowy female vocals' cliche it's not true.
I simply wanted to make the point that Portishead, although meaningful music to you, is not the ideal form of "trip hiop" that one should study if trying to really make authentic Trip Hop in my opinion.
"'slowed down breaks, hammond, double bass, willowy female vocals' cliche"
is EXACTLY what most people in the states would call portishead.
IF, and you may notice thats a big if, we were discussing for example hip hop, a genre which started out in the us, maybe then we may give a f**k what the people in the us think. however were discussing TRIP HOP a genre which has its roots here in the UK whether you like it or not, the history of trip hop is fairly well known and to argue against it as fervently as you do shows you are either as some people suspect trolling for effect or as i myself suspect a complete fuckwit.

omg us vs uk!!
Whatever. You think yall over there fucken are right because some dumb magazine makes every dummy out there think massive attack and portishead is what trip hop really is. First of all, there were records like that coming out for ages, before massive attack so f**k that. That portishead sound/massive attack sound is fucken corny and old and sleepy. I don't give a f**k if BT invented the stutter and Portishead invented trip hop. f**k that you to step off.

The fact that trip hop today sounds nothing f**king like that shows you it's been all over the place from the beginning. Portishead always gets props for friggin putting mics underwater and stupid shit like that, f**k give us our hiphop back.
