The KRK RP-8 monitors are very decent sounding and quite strong, at a decent price. I'm looking for equally strong/loud active monitors that also reach at least ~45Hz, and sound similar at a similar price. If you know these monitors (important, so that you know what I'm talking about) and also know of others that may be a better choice at this price range, please let me know. Thanks.

I personally have the bx8a's which go for $399 (pair) market value and am quite satisfied..however i still think rp-8s sound just a bit better. i think a nice step up would be the yamaha HS series. the the 5 inchers are only $199 a peice too.

although you should probably just man up and get the dyna audio bm5's

Thanks musikjock. I know BM5A and HS80M and both are in fact very considerably weaker than the RP-8, and don't reach as low bass. The HS80M sound very nice but are not loud. The BM5A are very good sounding, and I'd say better sounding overall than RP-8, and more accurate, though as high precision as theirs is not what I'm necessarily looking for in this case.

I personally use BM6A and the only thing other than them that I want are BM15A

. My brother doesn't want/need such ultimate precision, as he's a "casual listener" who wants very good quality, and monitors definitely have more of it than usual loudspeakers, especially when it comes to precise reproduction of the audio. BUT, he also wants high enough volume

, and most monitors at this price range definitely lack that. RP-8 though, reach a satisfyingly loud volume compared to others, with very nice quality.

I refuse to believe that the KRK RP-8 have no alternatives with similar loudness/bass range/overall quality

. I haven't been able to find anything else, and maybe that's indeed the case, but I gotta ask anyway before deciding.

Shy, Ive owned the rp-8s for a year and on the whole, have warmed to them. What's to stop your brother choosing them, or is it just some options you are looking for?

You are right, they kick out serious sound pressure and decent bass response. They have a few clear learning points, though, which you discover through numerous eye opening tests on other systems.

Oh and in the price range, only the KRK RP8s, M-Audio BX8, Behringer Truth B2031As and possibly the Event TR8s will get that low. I would be tempted towards the Samson Rubicons myself (the 5 or 6" cone from memory.)

Tannoy reveals ! I have the 5A ones, and compared them directly to my friends rp-5's and the tannoys came out on top for stereo imaging and overall clarity. The rp-5's had a higher frequency harshness that was quite fatiguing for us after long periods(perhaps from using metal tweeters). The Rp-5's did have more punch to the low end whilst the tannoys seemed to have rounder, more smooth bass.

These results we very much similar when we had a look at the RP-8 vs the Tannoy reveal 8D, however the tannoys really started to surpass the rokits the further up the price range we seemed to go.

Epiphany: thanks. Yeah, just checking for options before deciding. I'd consider TR8, but they're about as loud as BM5A, so too bad. Samson, that weird company that always has vague or highly optimistic specs

I'm always careful with them. Seems I can check the Rubicon R8A, so I will, thanks.

Coxy: although according to specs they're not very strong compared to RP-8, it seems good enough so I'll definitely have to check the 8D, thanks.

Have you tried Adams?

After trying Event TR8, Krk RP-6 and Yamaha HS80 (unfortunately each in a different place) I plan to give a try to Adam A7.

No problem. A7 are definitely awesome, I'd say unmatched at their price. They won a MIPA award this year by the way. Good luck with your monitor hunting.

Coxy, it shows how subjective monitoring really is - ive yet to see a good review of the Reveals. Regards the harshness on the Rokits though, I know what you are getting at. It took me a long time to realise the sound of a good mix on monitors isnt "hifi", with shaking bass and sizzling highs, raather it's flat and clear. Sounds self evident but I think learning HOW exactly a good mix sounds on your monitors is much more important than having top of the line genelecs.

Shy, AFAIK the Samson Rubicons have receieved overwhelmingly positive reviews from the "expert" music tech press. Even if they look a bit dodgy.

Rubicons are said to have something like Adam's ART tweeters. What about their quality? +don't they strain your ears when used extensively?

KRK RP-8 monitors, anything similar at the same price range?
