Has anyone used any of these and/or know the pros and cons of these. Or do you have any other recommendations for a midi controllable pad like this?

I'm very happy with my SPD-S (mainly because you can just build any set of sounds you want using .wav files on the CompactFlash card and even use it as a recorder.) Well worth the money for one.

Any particular questions??

Hey timobrien, thanks for the feedback. How well does it work with midi? Have you ever used it as just a midi controller through your computer? Does it come with any software to use it with your computer?

Is the CompactFlash card the only way to add sounds to it? Does it come with one and if not do you know the price?

Is it plug and play? Does it require drivers?

Does it have trigger inputs for connecting external pads?

Does it have a up/down footswitch input?

Does it have a footswitch input?

Do you know what up/down footswitch and regular footswitch does?

Can you use the footswitches to give each pad a different sound so that you can actually have more than one sound ready to go on a single pad depending on what position the foot pedal is in?

Have you ever used drum sticks with it? Is all the hardware pretty sturdy? Have you ever had any problems with any of it or does any of it seem cheap?

Yeh i've been thinking about this recently too... might be easier for me instead of getting a space hungry and very expensive v-drums kit... to get one of those alesis - get some extra inputs.. i.e the bassdrum and hi-hat pad... and whatnot (i wonder if these work with roland mesh pads)...

In any case - the alesis has a footswitch input and some trigger inputs... and they both can be used with drumsticks...

The Alesis seems to have more pads but the Roland has already built-in sounds...

Do you know of anymore pros and cons?

alesis is releasing their "performance pad" later this year... which is the same but with built in sounds...

You can buy the roland td-x brain and buy v drum pads separately. But the v-drum pads only have 2 or 3 regions to hit, center, edge, rim shot/bell. There are hand drum pads that have more areas.

Also, I've tried hitting the v-drum pads with my hands but they don't really trigger good like when using drumsticks.

80/90's style rock Drummers will a lot of times use the alesis along side with real drums to trigger a few sounds and 808 kicks and what not.

I'd like to add that i own the roland td-8 and personally, i do not like any of the sounds in there. I use my own sampled sounds.

Since then, I believe roland has come out with 3 or 4 versions of this drum brain. It's like on td-12 now or something.

Anyone know if the alesis control pad's Hihat input can be use to control open or close hihat?

Meaning using using just one pad for triggering the hihats(open and close) using the pedal to choose/control is triggering open or close hihat.

Are the pads loud? Are there any midi conflict going on?

I'm really looking forward to get one controller that I can play with drumsticks, cos I just moved to a smaller place and I don't hace enough space for my drumset.

I've seen a video in youtube, there's this guy who uploaded really nice samples to his SPD-S. Impressive.

If anyone is interested, I've been thinking about selling my Roland Octapad II Pad-80 controller which I haven't touched in 10 years. In addition the 8 pads, it has 6 external trigger inputs. I'm not sure what its worth these days, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

I've tried the Ion its cheap with built in sounds, but it started misfiring triggers after regular use. I now have the Alesis ControlPad. Everything is programable. It does have inputs for separate triggers. It also includes BFDlite which sounds way better than anything built into the Ion. Ion apparently is connected to Alesis because the layout is basically the same, but they apparently use some cheaper rubber in their pads.

Roland SPD-S vs. Alesis Control Pad (drumpad recommendation?
