A) How could I know? Leopard isn't out yet and I'm no Apple tester.
B) I don't know what it should improve regarding Parallels and VMware.

Regarding Parallels, it sits "on top" of OSX, so it can only use some (generic) drivers, soundcards aren't supported directly at all. Even ASIO4All didn't work for me.

And well, regarding your question for a soundcard for live useage: What are your demands?

There is another way to test the water before commiting to OSX / Mac. I fully accept its not exactly legal but there is a version of OSX 10.4.8 (known as hackintosh) which allows you (with some pain and maybe failure) to install this on a standard PC. This will allow you to test out some things before commiting to another platform. I have this arrangement and have OSX on a seperate HDD, it has allowed me to try demos of various packages without commiting all the way in hardware.

I'm not sure I can put this into correct words but.........

a year and a half ago I took the mac plunge (intel) and have literally been in hell every since. I think maybe too much typing to tell you why but I guess I can elaborate if someone wants.........

so now I'm back to my "ancient" amd 4000+ with cubase 4 and the same plugs as my coreduo mac and this pc is KICKING THE MACS ASS!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not even sure why anymore (though I might be in for speculation  )but the soundcard, settings are the same.

I'm taking the mac in for a checkup since I have the warranty, but regardless of why I'm going to stick with xp for some time and suffer the 2 or 3 little inconveniences.

botkiller wrote:I still like windows, but don't tell me that "only someone who doesn't know shit about computers" use Macs. If that's true, then why was Protools originally Mac only?
Because it was made for musicians and sound engineers, most of whom knew nothing at all about computers at the time [many still don't].
Why are there so many pro audio and video editing programs for OS X that are sworn by in studio situations? Why are most studio owners running Macs and not Windows systems?
Because that's what they have always had. It goes back a very long way and if you asked them, most wouldn't be able to give you any kind of definitive answer. I see it all the time in my industry. People use Mac because that's what they used in art college in 1986.
don't tell me I'm an idiot because I use an OS that is based on what I learned computing from, a command shell with actual commands, not a broken so-called shell that doesn't do all I need it to (what used to be DOS), with file management that sabotages itself (yeah, the registry is REAL stable - *barf*).
I don't need any reason at all to call you an idiot, the quote above should make it clear to anyone.
botkiller wrote:Hefty indeed, but it will last you for a long time.
Which is another interesting point. Who has ever kept a computer long enough for it to wear out? if it lasts two years it will be so far obsolete that you couldn't give it away. Sure, it's less of a problem with Mac's because you can always find some idiot to palm it off on. That might have worked in the old days when Mac's hardly ever got any faster but with Intel inside, they are going to date as quickly as a PC.
iain_morland wrote:The Mac Mini is an interesting option because it's so portable and I could of course use my existing (very nice) monitor - but are these now powerful enough for serious music production?
Everyone I know who has bought a Mac Mini has realised within 6 months that it was a waste of money. Two Mac people and a PC guy all agree that it is not very useful for anything beyond surfing the web. One is now serving as very expensive storage and the other two are gathering dust on a shelf, where they look very pretty when people come visiting.
iain_morland wrote:Actually - one further thought - if anyone can recommend a really good PC laptop manufacturer, I'd be interested to hear.
I can think of plenty - Dell, Toshiba, HP would be at the pointy end. I doubt anyone builds 'em better than Toshiba but Dell get my vote because they are so configurable. To get a similarly capable mac to my new M1330, I would have had to spend another Au$1350 or so [Au$2901 v Au$4258] and I would have ended up with something much larger than I wanted. With my Dell, I got exactly what I wanted and I didn't have to pay for a single thing I didn't need to do it.
justamuso wrote:Not having to worry about viruses, or spyware, or BSODs ... having my hardware just plug in and work (99% of the time) without having to install drivers which fight with each other
What cave did you crawl out of? You are talking about things that I haven't dealt with on any PC I have owned or used in the past 8 years or more. The last time I had any kind of conflict or driver issue would have been using Win95.
However, I'd advise you to wait until later in the year before committing. The new version of OSX (Leopard, or 10.5) is coming in October, and it contains the full, integrated version of Bootcamp, not a beta. Any bootcamp installation you did now may have to be deleted and reinstalled under Leopard (Apple make no promises).
And that is something you will need to get used to because Apple will screw you over like that whenever they feel like it.
johnny2johnny wrote:HP, says on their website, that they strongly recomend 2 gigs of ram for vista....... This is insanity, microsoft has really screwed this up....
Actually, it is insanely clever because Vista uses all that RAM to precache your most used applications so that they start much faster. If you have something better to use that RAM for, you can switch the function off. Personally, I'll happily give up half of my 4 Gb not to have look at splash screens anymore.

At the end of the day, I looked at all the options and nothing came close to the Dell I just bought [not delivered yet]. It is brimming with cutting edge stuff that Apple can't match with a 40% price premium. I get a super-thin LED-lit screen [TFT displays traditionally use flouros], Audigy sound, GeForce graphics, a system remote control that tucks into the Express card slot, WiFi sniffer that works even when the machine is switched off and Dell Media Direct, which lets me view pictures, video and MS Office files without booting the OS. Apple could match the CPU, graphics, memory and HDD combination, but only in a much larger 15" MBPro and without any of the cool stuff. OK, the Mac has FireWire but I don't want it so it would just be another stupid thing to have to pay for anyway. With my M1330, I can get whatever I need through the Express Card slot so I'll be after some eSATA goodness before long. Vista is a total unknown to me at this point but this bad-boy is going to have so much spare processing and memory available that I doubt it will be an issue [and the Vista drivers for my Toneport KB37 are supposed to be OK]. Better yet, when they were having supply problems with the LED screens, they threw in a spare 9-cell battery as a thank-you for my patience. And on the very rare occasions I've dealt with their support system, it has been excellent.

this thread is really really silly.

I read a review where they ran a test on a mac with a dual boot of windows and osx. I believe they used photoshop and for the test and guess what windows out performed osx on a mac. This was several months ago and I don't know if audio apps would get the same results and this doesn't take into account updates since. But still makes you think or laugh.

Post

it was with CS2, which was not intel yet, it used rosetta, i'd like to see the same test now with CS3(htat is UB)

I've had a lot of problems with my past dell computer and customer service (who I could barely understand). BUT, they did give me a whole new computer and extra stuff in the end (after I called them 7 times). And my friends dell computer burned a whole in itself and could have caused a fire but they gave him a brand new computer for the mishap. So, even if they do cause major damage, they always give in the end and I haven't had any problems with my most recent one.

How stable is the latest beta of bootcamp? Has anyone had any problems.

I just did the bootcamp thing again on my imac (I think I just gave some specs up top) and it's stable so far. I don't have everything running on it cause I don't want to kill any precious challenge/responses............

In fact, when you think about it, BONES doesn't only add to the entertainment. Admittedly, he's got a strong opinion, but I can always clearly understand it. And, most of the times, I even second things.
Now, if I just wasn't such a sheepish Logic-follower...
Otherwise, Macs aren't anything I'd ever bother with. The OS is nice and what not, but after all they're not worth it.

Oh no, you're not going to suck me into this black hole of a argument/discussion... I'm here purely to witness the magic that is BONES, he's kinda like an Aussie Don Rickles on steroids and I for one cannot get enough :hihi:

edit - if we could get 'frequently awesome' to argue with BONES on this thread I would be in heaven

Who is that Don Rickles bloke?

Anyways, if you're just watching this thread for entertainment (which I could understand...), why not just enjoy it? BONES certainly doesn't need anybodys appreciation. Not even yours (chicks, pff...).
