Hello, my Colleagues,

For the past month, I've been increasingly obsessed with finding a Rhodes piano sound that I like. All the freebies have sounded thin and unresponsive to me. I think I'll still eventually end up with Lounge Lizard or Velvet, but tonight, I built a sound that pleases me a hell of a lot.

I'm not the first, or the thousandth, to think about layering different instruments, but this combination works amazingly well for me. And it's all free.

Mix, in roughly equal parts:

1. Yannleo's new VST using the Rhodes patch, here: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=190332

I've fooled around with turning the various effects on and off, and like most of the variations.

2. MDA's ePiano, here: http://www.pluginspot.com/English/frames.html

I slowed down the tremolo, and fiddled with the distortion to get a tone I like. Low, but not off, distortion sounds good to me.

3. LearJeff's JRhodes3, here: http://learjeff.net/sf/sf.html

It's an .sf2, and I use SynthFont to play it.

All together they sound, to my ears, rich and juicy, wonderfully clear and stereophonic, and very musical. Much more so than any of them alone. Part of the reason, I think, is that they likely have different velocity layers, so the sound changes much more dynamically in combination than any single one does.

The really delightful part is that I can get that sweet honking distortion at higher velocities, without it sounding harsh.

Only about a 10% CPU hit on my AthlonXP 3200 rig in Reaper.

Now all I gotta do is learn how to play my keyboard better, and I'll seriously rock out on this tone. :D

Lemme know how it sounds to you if you decide to mess with this. I'd love to hear some suggestions on how to make it better. I'll probably experiment with adding or substituting some of the WusikStation patches later this week, but my ears are pretty burnt up right now, after four hours of fooling around...

Take care,

GreyLion

Try throwing MrRay 73 into the mix, it is low cpu too. I love it alone for the Rhodes sound and it's a donation-ware program. I'll look into the your layering idea though. (I personally dislike the sound of MDA's ePiano plug).

I like the tone of both Mr. Ray's, but I get this weird, very audible crackly sound whenever I load either of them, either alone or with other stuff in the chain. I don't get that sound with any other VSTs. I don't think it's an issue with buffer settings, which is usually the culprit, as I've pulled it up to 512 and still get the sound.

I'm more than willing to donate, if that will fix it, though from the site, that isn't a feature of the unpaid demo, just supposed to be the flash screen for a minute.

Any wisdom from anybody here on this subject?

If you search in the kvr forum database, you will found that the MrRay vsti is bassed partially in the Learjeff soundfont work. Interesting to know, i believe.

Whoah. Interesting indeed; I didn't know that. I'm waiting pretty impatiently for the new Mr. Ray 73 Mark II to come out. If I can get it to run without static, and it sounds even half as good as I think it will, I'll definitely buy it.

There's just something about that Rhodes sound that winds my clock. :D

The Rhodes sounds is really amazing! I love Deep House, and I've found this love comes from the ubiquitous Rhodes-like sounds presents in this style.

I'll try it ASAP (at this moment, I use mainly MDA Epiano and Yohng EPiano)

Thanks for the tip! :)

Thanks for the idea.
I layered mda epiano, jrhodes3, and yannleo rhodes in FLStudio, but it appears mda epiano is producing an occasional pop in my speakers (annoying). Any idea why?

Post

Thanks for taking your time to share this idea, Greylion. The layered rhodes indeed gets a nice full sound. I have also replaced MDA Epiano with MrRay 73 as the MDA Epiano has some annoying clicks in improperly looped samples here and there which spoil the fun (a shame, it's a very nicely sounding plugin otherwise).

Not according to the blurb on their website...
Mr Ray 73 wrote:Although it may sound like a sampled instrument, MrRay SeventyThree is still synthesized, as the sound it produces is 100% calculated in real time...

I've tried it and the result is really AMAZING! MDA Epiano + this Yannleo works nicely, together!

I've played a little with compression, EQ and so. Great sound!

Thanks for the tip Greylion! :)

zynaddsubfx also has great rhodes sounds, and multifx to sweeten the sounds even more! I'll have to add some vibraphones to your nice recipe,
or I won't get any sleep!

If I recall correctly, I think Guido (ZioKiller) had Learjeff's samples as a reference when coding MrRay73, but that's all.

Post

Hmmm. Sounds like I'm going to have to give ZynAddSubFX another try. I originally fooled with it just for a few minutes a year or so ago, then deleted it. I keep reading here about how cool it sounds, though.

And I'll definitely put some more effort into figuring out how to make the Mr. Rays work in my rig. It's weird, because Mr. Ray 22 makes the staticky sound only about half the time. Sounds perfectly fine tonight now, after being staticky for the first 10 minutes I had it in the chain.

Adding it in, so that I have four instruments playing at once, changes the tone in a way that I alternate between liking more and not liking as much. I think my ears are just burnt by now. Will have to come back to this in a couple of days and see what I hear then. Obsession...

Anybody here got any secret knowledge about how close Guido is to letting loose with Mr. Ray 73 Mark II?

Damn, I wish I could play like Ray Charles....

Oh, okay. I wasn't aware of that. I thought when marce said that MrRay 73 was based on the samples, that he though it was a sampled instrument. Just a bit of confusion on my part. Sorry
