can 2.5 be forced install, an option i saw available after refusing to unistall previous versions, and still have 2.5 and 2.2.2 existing ?

You might be able to go into the VSTPlugins folder, rename the Sampletank.dll to somethingelse.dll, then do the install.
I don't work for IK or ES but I do work in tech support and this is a common trick we use when installing to not worry about overwriting things.
(If it doesn't work, you can either rename it back or uninstall/reinstall the old.)

well I thinks a 2.5 install messes with the effects and layout and such things etc... so maybe not
wish a knowligeable person would clarify the 2.2.2 compatibility issue with older work

been getting good response from IK support, we are working on it
but installing 2.5, (which in my case gives error messages of "registry error"), then removing it, then re-installing 2.2 (not 2.2.2) fixed it: I have a functional ST2.2
but still no stand alone
anyway guess I will stay there, I already have the full CSR anyway and Cubase4 Groups can do the global mix stuff

THANK YOU IK TECH SUPPORT they got things working as a 2.5
both in Cubase4 and stand alone
all old instrument lists are intact

Dont forget to copy all your registration data as you will need to re-enter it later
I uninstalled all Sampletank2.x before but not ST2, meaning 2.2 and 2.2.2 using the Windows Add/Remove app
There is a step here to remove all references in the registry to Sampletank2.x which I did not have to do as there were none found, but this step is best done with the help of the tech support of IK
Then I installed 2.5
Perfect install, no problems.
