Hello,
This idea occured to me recently. Getting an extremely powerful VST synth and do EVERYTHING with it... basses, drums, leads etc. Since only one synth to focus on, one can actually learn everything about the synth.

Think of Commodore-64 music, the SID chip. One 'sound generator' for everything. I know reFX has a synth named QuadraSID that emulates the SID. But that it is not I seek; what I want is something that doesn't imitate anything(an authentic hardware...), but rather, has enough power to create a very broad range of sounds from the scratch. Functionally similar to a SID chip, but not imitating a particular hardware.

I read about CSound, but it apparently doesn't have VST support, and honestly the method of programming it (a programming language with hundreds of functions) doesn't appeal to me. Sure it has great power and flexibility, but it seems dealing with it won't be fun.

Something that is balanced between the two, more flexible than, say, QuadraSID but not too much "deep" like CSound. Any ideas?

What would be good candidates for this 'ultimate' synth? Stuff from Native Instruments, Morphine from ImageLine,... ?

you have a few choices...... Um, Reaktor... Witch is sort of many synths in 1 program. Has modules for anything. Vaz Modular - considered to be the best sounding softsynth, also extrememely extensive... sadly no osx version.... Tassman!!! something I have heard of and dont know much about... Finally Virsyn Tera <-------- I own this and love it.... FYI I am doing all my music with 3 synths. and no more! Reaktor down the road is on my shopping list. and Also Reason 4 is on my shopping list.... Plz keep in mind in the days of hardware most producers had more than 1 synth, its just the way it is... but alas, the three synths I own, Rapture, Predator, and Tera 3.... I think nowadays people have a lot of gear and software because you dont have to shell out 800 or 2000 dollars for a synth..

a couple of hundred bucks, presto software synthesizer.. its just easy I guess to wind up with a bunch if your not careful.... and you have the means etc...

Virsyn Tera, NI Reaktor, Vaz Modular, Nexsyn, Reason

I'm sure there are several others, too. I used to write whole songs in Vaz Modular. It has the added bonus of having good, simple step sequencers and a 16-channel mixer.

There are several uber-synths/samplers on the market that can do a whole production no worries. Look at: Wusikstation, Zebra, Shortcircuit... to name a few.

Personally I prefer smaller modules that I can arrange more freely which is the thinking behind SynthStudio Pack but the 1 synth to do everything has it's attractions.

Try my Unknown 64 it's not very close to a SID

but i tried. I can make a 1000 presets with this thing.And still love any of them

I only used wusikstation on some songs I did a while ago. Still, the new stuff I worked out, all synth stuff is wusilstation based.

+1 for vaz mod. its as easy or difficult as you want...its very approachable since it doesn't go too low level...being a modular makes it extremely flexibile...oh, and the sound?

I know Joy Electric did something similar with an analog synth...I would think the synth you choose would depend on the sound you're going for.
