Hello guys,

I see a bit of confusion about the CM sponsorship, so I guess I should make it a bit more clear. :)

CM is sponsoring the Developer Challenge. Yes, but what is CM exactly going to do other than looking pretty with their logo on the DC page? Well, bring you fame of course. :)

They are going to cover the stories, do interviews with developers and stuff. I'll have more exact details for you as it all progresses.

I think it's a really good deal in terms of you guys getting exposure. :)

----So you (tuz) pay, devs work, and CM gets their pages filled for free. Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't they (and other magazines) be covering it anyways ? Just seems like they could pony up a grand or two, considering they are going to sell their magazine and literally make money off of covering the whole event, and their magazine goes for how much a copy ? Free advertising is good, but they do that anyways (they mention freeware & sharware, and the Dev Challenge 2K6), it's their jawb to cover things like this, it's why anyone buys magazines with mostly ads and a little 3-4 month old news in them.

it would make me really happy too if they donated some money towards the prize fund. unfortunately, i don't think they will. but, i think that the publicity would great as well. last year, they only had a blurb about the developer challenge which was a disappointment for me. i feel like i failed our developers. but this year at least we're getting decent coverage. :) one step at a time. i seriously want the best for all our freeware developers. and last year's cash and non-cash donations showed that others do as well. i think if we get the word out there that there's this great yearly event at kvr, following years will get more attraction.

It was not your fault tuz, last year seemed very hectic and it was good groundwork for future developer challenges. Well done for last year. :D :hihi:

----Hopefully by 2009, we'll have Sony or Steinberg or someone big fronting $20K and making sure the journalists show up eh. :hihi: The CM deal is not like *exclusive* coverage etc. though is it, like other magazines can do write ups if they want also ?

Umm, how come there isn't some sort of obvious splash screen reminding visitors to KVR-VST about this contest - at least remind them to vote!

I found out about last year's DC by accident while looking for other stuff.

Expecting something like the norm in terms of 'absolute basic expectations regarding marketing" I figured I'd hear more and follow up then.

I saw nor read ziltch, and honestly didn't even think about it until looking at another website from a developer talking about the DC. hmmmmm I wonder what happened in that - did it even finish up?

So thus this post.

CM nor any magazine is going to make this a success if KVR-VST is NOT even willing to do the basics in terms of marketing.

Perhaps it's the extrememly strong "anti-commercialist" sentiment running through many of the threads here regarding all things related to commercialism, that causes KVR-VST to NOT promote the contest in the least on its website, I dunno......

Still, just because "hype" is so often trite, insulting to one's intelligence and pushes garbage does NOT mean "hype" or "promotional info" in other words "marketing" is a bad thing in and of itself.

It's "what you say and how you say it" that makes the difference.

If by chance there were regular notices given to people who visit KVR-VST both members and guests - then I missed it.

If there were NOT, then this is a glaring error on your part.

Nothing makes success impossible more than being too modest. Nothing ensures failure more than catering to those extremes that insist the only legit way to be successful is to "be found."

In terms of a contest that's oxymoronic.

In the very least, USE YOUR OWN website to promote the contest.

You do NOT ave to be obnoxious is that's the fear.

A simple splashscreen 1x every 3x a person visits would be great.

A simple flashing banner ad would be wonderful.

A flash ad would be great with animation even better.

;-) I say this because I want you guys to succeed, not out of disrespect. You do a great thing, and I don't think you get appropriate credit.

top left corner just belov the kvr logo at the frontpage.
that same logo is visible at this page also, if you look up to thetopmost left and then down right diagonal you'll se it.

Actually, IIRC, there were several mentions in subsequent CM issues, including real profiles on a couple of the devs contained in the special "200 Best Free" programs issue.

They were able to spill quite a bit of ink last year without official participation, not to mention filling up their freebie disc.

Coverage is good for the devs, but CM should at least throw in a free subscription to the mag to a few winners in my opinion.

That sounds good to me.
