Hi there,

Please write your questions, critics, and suggestions for the next version here (encouragements are welcome too :-)). That way it will be easier for me to keep track of them and address the issues that might pop up.

To keep in mind:

1) Blip is a stand-alone application only, so don't try to run it from your host :-).

2) If you get an error and can't run Blip, you are probably missing dlls. Please install this (it's small):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

that way, you will be sure to get everything you need to run Blip, and other Windows programs using the same Dlls.

3) To get a sound from Blip you will first need to create your kit, i.e. associate a sound with each row of the grid. Then you can press on play and start composing / drawing in real-time.

To create a kit, select wave files in the kit editor (little drum icon).

You can either select files manually, or select a whole folder to fill the kit automatically in one click. You can also ask Blip to choose samples randomly on your hard disk for some crazy loops, or ask it to slice a long wave into 64 shorter samples and assign them.

If you don't know what Blip's icons are for, simply hover over them, and a short hint is displayed at the bottom of the window.

4) sound quality (i.e linear / quadratic interpolation or truncation for lowfi) can be selected in the settings window.

5) Make sure to read the pdf documentation as a lot of shortcuts and tricks are available to use the program.

Thanks,

Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,

Some questions about kit making: how does the "slice to wave" function work? is it slicing to a specified length or is it based on transient detection or something else? and what is the minimum length for a wave file to be sliced? I kept getting a message on a lot of files I tried that the wave file I selected was too short.

Three suggestions for future iterations:

1) ship it with a demo kit, just to see the functionality before having to go digging around.
2) create a subdirectory to contain sliced waves, otherwise you end up with a lot of new files all over the place
3) change the sliced file length restriction to something a bit shorter, would give us opportunity to do a pseudo-granular kind of arrangement.

Cool thing you've made, lots of functionality to explore in it. I'd love to some day see it as VST that outputs MIDI (rather than just export to MIDI file) to use it as a live in-host sequencer, since the drawing function is so fluid for sequencing. Still, I'll be making good use of it now.

Blip is so far one of my clear favourites of the competition, I love it. One thing I would like though (and is mentioned by Shamann above) is having the restriction on the length of the file you have sliced greatly reduced... I would love to be able to load a four beat drum pattern in and have it snipped into 64 tiny slittle snippets.

Awesome work on this program, thank you!

Or even slice up shorter files into fewer slots, that way you could build up a fairly varied kit really quickly.

Also, minimize window would be handy (not essential, but I'm playing around with it at work).

any suggestions for those running into these installing probs mentioned in that other thread?

Yes please. It stalls but will not execute because of an incompatabilty with my system? XP NTFS.

taiwanizer and lucknow13, I will look into that incompatibilty issue asap. In the meantime, can you make sure that you have MFC80.DLL and MSVCR80.DLL in your system folder? Thanks!

Post

Nope! They're missing. Google links to information, that they should be installed with some XP service pack. I thought I was up to date, but no it seems I'm not, although auto-update is active ... well thanks Bill Gates
Does anyone know, if I can just download and copy the files to my system-folder?

Yes, you definitely need them (but keep yours too!). Adding them will not break anything.

You can go there to download them for example:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mfc80
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-f ... ml?msvcr80

Let me know how it goes for you.
Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words, shamann and willmorton.
- I added the slice feature as a little extra, but I realize now that people use it more than I expected.
I will definitely add a popup window that offers more options to use it in the next version.
- The MIDI out option is a great idea.
- I planned to release Blip with a default kit but I got this version done just in time for the dealine :-).
Thanks for trying it !

HI, can I make Blip smaller....my old monitor is 800X600, anything larger than that and I can' see anything clearly.

I can't see Blip's play button, and it's obviously larger than my screen. So I haven't got any sound out of it yet.

Edit: Ok I found play button is also the space bar. But it's still huge...
