I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on how to make seagull sounding patches. I'm talking just in general with your average subtractive synthesis synthesizer and some basic effects.
For examples of what i'm talking about check out:

I don't think that it's possible with just straight up straight subtractive synths (a la Vanguard). You will probably need something with multi-stage envelopes or something more modular. I remember a while ago there was a thread where one of the members here made a soundset for what I think was Sytrus, which had the most realistic seagull patch, which was completely synthesized. You can try searching for it.

sawtooth LFO modulating pitch of high-pitched OSC, with plenty of real-time manipulation of rate and depth.
failing that, if you have a wah-wah pedal, try plugging the input/ouput jack plugs into the wrong sockets. whatever you do though, turn yer volume down first. i'm not sure if that's what PF used for the "seagull"-ish sounds towards the end of "Echoes", but it certainly sounds like it.

hey i got a sound that is kind of close to what i was looking for. Oddly enough I wasn't trying to make a bird sound, I was trying to emulate a sound effect on a Autechre song.
yes start off with a saw wave played pretty high up. Set an EG that modulates pitch to start with immediate attack that trails off. Set the pitch mod value pretty high. You want the pitch to decrease with the EG. You want the same kind of EG for amp as well.
Use a high pass filter, set resonance to a little over mid way and fiddle with cutoff to find a good spot.
Lastly, put on a good delay preferably set to bpm synch. Try 3/16th.
Play some notes.

Adrian Belew did some great seagull sounds on guitar using a slide and delay, playing short notes above the 12th fret and sliding down.
Listen to the King Crimson song 'Matte Kudesi' on the 'Discipline' album from 1981. Maybe not what you were looking for, but fantastic none the less!

There's a patch in the Absynth 3 default bank called something like 'Seagulls' that does this.
I'm not at my music computer, so I can't look, but someone might look at that.

catch a gull and get it retrofitted with ports so it responds to pitch via cv, the gate signal can clamp its beak open and shut.

Oh yes it is. Jarre used it in his 1976 album Oxygene.
