I can understand how it'd be a rocky start coming to grips with it, but seriously how will you truly know if it's good for you anyways if you don't get in there and makes your own presets and patches for your own music?

I might even go so far as to say that if you don't make your own presets with it you don't really have business talking about the specific qualities of the synth, except of course for stupidly obvious things like waveform aliasing or non-working controls or if the thing doesn't even work at all and such.
----This is not about ANY particular synth or effect, but, if the "factory" or built-in presets aren't any good, why should the user think they can do better ? And if there aren't very many, that might as well indicate that the range is very slim. Are these fair assumptions ? Maybe not, but from what I can see/hear, and from how I feel, they are the reality of the situation. "If the creator of the dang thing couldn't make it sound good and show off it's range, then how am I supposed to?!", is kind of how I look at it. However, that said, a dozen great presets are better than 50 mediocre repetitive ones any day, so quality always counts, even in small amounts. :)

I do agree with you to a point, I mean yeah the presets should more or less show off the synth in the extremities, but also if they are too good, the user may be turned off cause they think they couldn't do better, or like you said if they suck then they may think the synth is not very usefull. But still, and I know this will sound horribly biased and somewhat a contradictory idea, but I think if people can't bring out the best in synths, they aren't very good with them. At the same time though I recognize that even the best sometimes can't bring life out of a synth, and most of the times that's when the synth actually does suck, or by its very nature is limited in what it can do.

Iunno, there's way too much to get in to and way too many technicalities, especially when we're talking about a time frame of a month in this competition to have to really come to grips with stuff, so I think at this point I'm just gonna leave it with those thoughts and call it a day. :P

Overall, while I do value presets, I also think end users (myself included sometimes, to be honest) should keep an open mind approaching synths instead of a closed one if they think that presets = definate end quality.

Cheers folks. :)

More than a few people reported not being able to get any sound out of this synth, which leads me to believe that had it included a few presets it would have gotten more time with those folk, rather than being tossed aside thinking it was broken.

Sure, we shouldn't judge the value of a synth by its presets, just like we shouldn't judge people by their appearance, but face it, We Do. With all the VST competition out there awaiting evaluation, it's almost a given that you put your best foot forward to show off what you've got and grab people's attention. A plugin can get a lot of mileage from a well crafted bank of presets, especially since not every musician is, or wants to get involved with synth programming and sound design.

I know a lot of people here look down their noses at those who don't roll their own, but that activity is often contrary to making music. I've spent a few sessions just fiddling with a plugin, and ending up with a few great presets, and maybe a better understanding of the thing, but little to no musical output, so I can appreciate those who just want to open a plugin, pick a preset, and move on (maybe even tweaking it a bit). A plugin with all initialised patches instantly throws me into sound design mode, so I tend to stay away from those since my objective is often music.

With the DC entrants I was in evaluation mode, so I played around with IFL and ended up with some decent presets, but also discovered some shortcomings (like the effects, and wishing it had at least two wave oscillators).

After spending so much time with IFL, when I came across another entry with no presets (not even system to store any) I said, "No thanks, I don't have the time for this anymore", and moved on.

----I tried this one today, and while it was a bit frustrating to work with at first, it was sure a tweaker's dream. I remember way back what, 6 or so years ago when drawing your own waveform on the screen still seemed like something from a sci-fi novel. I would have to agree that presets, even just 10 or so, would've been a blessing here, but if you like weird/cool interactive synths then grab this one and draw your own waveforms with it. :)

Whoever said there are no LFOs should RTFM. The envelope generators can be cyclical.

Using looped envelope segments aren't the most convenient way to implement an LFO. It would help if there were some way to store some standard patterns in the envelopes. Ultimately dedicated LFOs would be best ;)

I built the most phat hoover sound out of this. It was very fun. I have not had this much fun tweaking knobs in a long time. It has some great sound building capabilities. It is one of my faves (yes out of all of them). I don't know why exactly, I just really like it. The wave drawing is very cool. I don't care about
presets.

With this synth you start out very raw and then tweak, tweak, tweak. If you can't make some phat ass sounds with this, then it is your own fault.

Good job. :D
