I've only read the first few pages of this thread - stopping at the flame war - so please bear with me. The re sampling algorithm is a major factor in the sound here. Why don't you use the free .dll from Voxengo? It's very best free re sampler I have heard. Is it technically impossible? Or Problems due to licensing?
This is a very interesting plugin you've made here, I'd love to see it blossom.

Ooh, that looks pretty neat. Yeah, actually it seems like it's something I could use, although I'd definetely make using it optional, and still support my own up/downsampling algorithms...

so how does oversampler.os_r8_2.dll sound, for 2x oversampling using r8brain.dll? :D

If the attack is that quick at 44.1khz, then the transition is much too quick for a human to pick up anyway
I'd think (& here I'm not 100% sure of what I'm talking about - feel free to correct), that as you can consider a compressor's envelope as ring modulating the input, the highest freq in the result would be the sum of the highest in both signals. If the attack is slow, it's neglectable, but if it's fast, then you'd get aliasing. Depending on the attack & how the envelope is smoothed up, it may matter.
That said, I implemented 2x oversampling in my compressor (mainly because it has saturators), but I can't hear much diff in practice.
Oversampling would also allow (sample) fractional times for delays, compressor times, etc, but that shouldn't make any difference.

Yep, that should work ... you need to have <plugin>.dll and <plugin>.os.dll and <plugin>.os.os.dll - should work, I think, although I haven't tried that.
I tried it and it works very well (no crash...)

Now, that would be AMAZING! I'm not complaining about the quality of your own algorithms, it's just that R8Brain has been tested considerably by a lot of people and always seems to be at least, top two. You can see good test results here http://src.infinitewave.ca/

Also, have you considered some kind of GUI for the plugin? It's a little inconvenient to have to rename the .dll all the time :-) Of course, I can happily live with doing that, just an idea for the future.

Thanks again for the great freebie, I'm going to have lots of fun testing this over the weekend (the only thing I've tried so far is impOSCar and it does sound a little better - even did a blind ABX to make sure it wasn't placebo).

I agree, that would be cool if you could integrate r8brain.

Tony did you test imposcar at at 44, 48 or 96 (oversampled to 88.2, 96,or 192)? I tried it 96 oversampled to 192 with wusik's and it didn't work. He did just release a new beta that I haven't tried yet.

let's not forget that sytrus (which gol designed) has 64 times oversampling options for both render and realtime modes. Looks like a bit of stupidity slipped in there.... wouldn't you say, nufflink?

sytrus doesn't hold a candle to the presets that came with the fm7. That thing will always kick the sytrus' ass usability wise.

that's because you just don't have a clue. FM is really prone to aliasing, and I don't know any other way to reduce it than oversampling. It's really needed here.

and who said that we were talking about using chris' plug only with synths that didn't utilize any form of fm synthesis (i hope you realize that some sort of osc fm option on any decent synth is just a little rare nowadays...)

btw josh, you should write a book. A book to enlighten everyone here about:
-the audibility & intermodulation of freqs above 20khz
-the audibility of 64bit mixing
-additive synthesis explained with polarity stuff (or whatever it was)
-your knowledge on oversampling
-other gems of yours I've missed in this forum

Then get Spielberg to write the preface and it will sell like hot cakes.
