Thanks. It seems the Boss SP-202 has evolved into the Roland SP-404. I guess that is my best bet as far as new products go.

Roughly in the same price range as the SP404 is the Korg Electribe ESX-1. It'll sample, but also has built in sounds I think. The 404 is probably your best bet for a fun new portable thing to have around.

A lot more choices if you look at used gear, although newer gear tends to be a bit more portable.

And Yamaha made some impressive looking mini-sampler desktop unit a few years back (can't remember the model name, sorry) that was mainly designed for DJs etc. I'll check around see if I can find the name of it - was quite cheap with limited sampling time from what I can remember and didn't sell that well, so may well be very cheap 2nd hand. :) I vaguely remember it had some very impressive features and gadgets on it for a real budget unit.

I think it might have been one of these I was thinking about...

Dunno how much they go for 2nd hand but I'm sure I remember them going for only a few hundred when new? And looks like they have more memory than I thought too...

I have a Yamaha SU-10. Nice, fun little unit. Cost me around $80 bucks.

I also used to have a Zoom Sampletrack which I regret I sold. It was great for making beats and stuff, although its sequencer sucked. Might replace it someday with one of those Korg Electribes.

However, if you want it more for melodic sounds, not just beats, you should try something like an old Akai S3000.

Thanks for these. I'm fairly hardware ignorant so this has been quite useful.

Roland s670 s770... Might be a pair of the best samplers ever. If you get one with the mouse and video card it's a lot like working on your computer.. Only you can disconnect the monitor and mouse leaving you with a midi module.

With one of these you can build your own sound canvas. I remember hearing something about them having the JV1080 engine with a sampler front end. No matter what they are, they sound great.

If you watch you can get one with 32mb ram for less than
$150 bucks.

E-mu samplers are also cheap these days. I've seen ESI-32's go for under $75 bucks. (watch out for faded displays on the esi32)
