how much have you used pure basses? The fact you have two options of scales, across the strings or up and down the strings seems very natural, especially seeing how they are samples. But I'm always looking for more...:)

Well, I have purchased Black Bass. But one thing, where do I download it? The whole order process didn't seem to have any links anywhere. Not in my account, not in either email I got, nothing.

Where am I supposed to get it?

It's a bit late to enter this thread with suggestions now, I know, but fwiw here are some more thoughts...

I was in a similar position a couple of weeks ago, looking for a really good bass guitar sample set (preferably for Kontakt). I wanted one with a sound suitable for pop/rock. It was important to me that it could sound realistic and expressive. I already had Manytone UBK and although very happy with UBK's many styles and articulations, I also wanted something with automatic release sounds and round robin triggering of samples (when playing the same note).

I compared Black Bass, Direct Bass, Mock Bass and Warwick Bass and tried judging from audio demos, specifications and by asking questions here on the forum what would suit me best.

I immediately fell in love with Black Bass of course, because of all its amazing features. I didn't like the funky sound of it so much though (because of flatwound strings I understand). It wasn't the sound I was looking for really and I wasn't sure to what degree I'd be able to tweak the sound with e.g. Ampeg SVX to fit my music.

The Kontakt scripting used by Mock Bass seemed really cool and it had the perfect type of sound for me. Unfortunately it was only sampled in one velocity level and I thought from the demos it sounded a bit too "static", possibly because of this.

Warwick Bass I simply didn't like the sound of much in the demos.

So in the end I went for Direct Bass and I'm very happy with this choice! I love the sound of it and it has all the main features I was looking for: Fingered and plucked, DI (want to use it with Ampeg SVX), multiple velocity samples, round robin on same note and release samples. Only thing I think it's missing is fret noises to make it sound more realistic. What I ended up doing was copying fret noise samples from the UBK collection to the DirectBass set - problem solved! :D

What also made me go for the Pettinhouse alternative in the end was this offer:

DirectGuitar sounds amazing and there was no way I could pass up on this bundle deal! Pettinhouse seems like a great company to do business with btw. I got prompt response to email and delivery of the DVDs was very quick!

Scarbee's Slapped and Fingered is IMO still one of the best collections for the money out there.

As someone else already mentioned, they're available as downloads... I got mine on CD (or was that DVD? Can't remember) for about $75.

I bought one - with a bit of practice, haven't looked for a bass guitar sample since and it's way more fun than trying to get believable sound with samples.

Its all I use for bass, one of my favorite sample libraries of any type to be honest. I'm still not quite sure if I'll be getting the newer Scarbee Black Bass, but it seems to be every bit as good and then some, of course a bit different tone.

Not that I can slap expertly or anything, but I don't really write anything needing it, and it's a much more creatively satisfying process :)

I can see both sides. I've been playing bass, finger-style, for more than 20 years, off and on. I've got a P copy with nylon tapewounds. It is certainly satisfying to get the real tone of this- and so very simple, just DI and you're off and running- and yet at the same time I'm exploring the idea of learning to make a plugin synth to mimic this tone for this reason:

GREAT bass playing will make or break a song, and it is a life-work.

It's so easy to get a simple bass part happening, but it's so hard to do really great, or complicated and energetic, bass parts that I can see the rationale for a synthetic version too. There are some things that would be great fun to program that I couldn't possibly play cleanly... often my favorite synth part in a track is the bass part.

Food for thought. Hey, why not have both! :)
