Could I get a Kick drum trigger and set the control to play my kick sample - note C1? (I've heard people describing the openness of a hi hat being controller by a foot switch...)

Anyone ever tried it?

Sure, there are several ways to trigger a sample by a C1 midi note that's generated by pressing a footswitch or with a piezo mic stuck on a base drum.

Provided you use a Audio to Midi interface or software, of course you can use a trigger to play a kick sample. THats what the trigger is for...

For instance, the Roland Kick pedal could be used with out buying the rest of the kit?

You'll also need some form of midi brain that translates the electrical signals into midi messages. Alesis has a cheaper one than Roland. Or you hook it up to your laptop or whatever, pray it acts as a microphone and use some software to do the hard work.
