A lot of realy intresting thoughts. THank you everybody so much. Thanks william for the not that c-minor was beethovens fav key.. I was not aware of that. Also to those who mentioned d minor is the sad key.... This I allready new.... Paul G---- I picked it out of the air, I am making a dance track, but I play guitar as well, but this is not a guitar song. Cookie once again good idea's.... Somebody said, soem people have trouble with certain keys. This could very well be true. maybe I have a c minor deffiency....
well i can be a very determined person so I must try to continue with the c minor....
THank you everybody for the thoughts, they were so intresting to read.

You can however have both Db major and D# minor.
This too, very intresting.

All due respect, but they are perfectly valid keys... double sharps and double flats are musical notes distinct from their enharmonic equivalents; it's just that we have got so used to an equal tempered world that it is easily forgotten where the scales come from. Violins, trombones, slide whistles, etc, when played by people who know their instrument can play a double sharp or flat correctly keeping a scale perfectly intune without any of the equal tempered 'OK, I'll be mostly intune for you' approximations.JumpingJackFlash wrote:Neither D# major nor Db minor are technically valid keys. I used to work with a clarinetist who would go through melodies I'd written adjusting her fingering so that an A in a C major ascent would be intune, as would the A in an G major decent a few bars later. Both were the same note on a keyboard, but are actually different frequencies when done properly. She took this into account, and even tho' I don't have golden ears by any means, when listening blind I was able to tell the one that sounded 'sweeter' - the one where she didn't play the equal tempered scale... I could have transposed those lines into keys with x and bb, and she would have played them correctly
If double sharps and flats weren't legitimate notes, they would have been dropped from the theory books years ago.

nope, there is no key of D# major, or Db minor. Double flats and double sharps have nothing to do with intonation systems, they exist to enable consistent intervallic spelling (a major seventh above C is B, a minor seventh Bb, a diminished seventh Bbb, etc), independent of whatever tuning system. Notes are not keys.duncanparsons wrote:

I have to agree with the earlier poster, though -- D minor is indeed the saddest key. If only Love Pump had been recorded in Doubly...

Yes. That's a human ear, all right.

Yeah, what's wrong with that? I don't worry about what key I am in. I do what I do.nuffink wrote:Is that what you do?BASSDRIVE wrote:Just use you ears and fingers. f**k all the theory.
I don't start a song with the intention of starting in a certain key. I'll start in whatever the hell I want. Whatever sounds good for what I want to achieve.
I don't think a blind musicians knows what a letter A,B,C,D,E,F,G look like. They only know it by ear. I have the same philosophy. I can careless about knowing those letters. I'll let my ears be the foundation.

sometimes you reach a point in music when you start to hear in keys, and sometimes you dont...
doesn't make too much a diff either way I guess...

Good stuff. I love listening to the kind of music created by the kind of talent that can ignore the rules, f**k the theory and still create something awesome.BASSDRIVE wrote:Yeah, what's wrong with that? eh, music theory at the end of the day is simply based on the practice of what people have done. it is not based on any real formula...nuffink wrote:Good stuff. its just sorta when you talk about key your talking about a really old journey from the tonic note.. at least that is how I have come to see it.
although there are many different roads to take, chances are if you music is listenable you are ahearing to theory on some level, wheather you are aware of it or not.

Do you mind. I'm talking to BASSDRIVE. He doesn't even care what key he's in, he lets his ears be the foundation and he recommends this as a method. In fact he's so confident that he's willing to big it up on a theory forum.
I'm intrigued. I want to hear the results of this non theory.

1. I don't see how I have discredited anything he said.
All I said was somtimes you start to hear music in a different way.
2. Your talking to everybody who reads your post's welcome to the bbs.
3. chances are if you touch a note, anywhere on any instrument, wheather you tap a key on the piano, or you imput the note with your mouse, the note is still going to have a name...
A, B, C, C# etc... so by my saying, if your music is listenable your probably incorparating thoery and might not know it, I don't see what is so wrong, wierd or mean about that...
well whatevers clever I suppose...
