So, the full product page and purchase is coming soonSquids wrote:http://www.oceanwaydrums.com/
By the way, according to the audio demos, I really like how the drums sound punchy !
Is there some vintage compressors and equalizers on the drums kit that are not part of the product, or is it the raw sound of Ocean Way Drums ?

I can only judge from the sound of my tiny little Roland MA-8's that are hooked up to my internet computer, but yeah as far as I can tell, there's a fair amount of eq and compression, especially on the kicks, some gated toms, verb, etc. Sounds like high-end hardware too, so yeah maybe we'll luck out and some of these great sounds will be presets.K-Slash wrote:Is there some vintage compressors and equalizers on the drums kit that are not part of the product, or is it the raw sound of Ocean Way Drums ?Squids wrote:http://www.oceanwaydrums.com/

I think those are the RAW Ocean Way Drums. Steve did the demos so I will ask him. We'll be doing more demos as well covering a variety of styles. Anyway, I will ask but I don't think he used any additional processing.K-Slash wrote:So, the full product page and purchase is coming soonSquids wrote:http://www.oceanwaydrums.com/.

One of the things that is unique and interesting about Ocean Way Drums is that it is truly ENGINEERED down to the preset balances and everything. YET you can engineer/produce it yourself as well with the full flexibility of something like BFD. You see, I love things like BFD, because I love engineering flexibility! Ocean Way Drums goes beyond that though by not only having top engineers make the presets but the elements they are mixing aren't just raw mic channels. They've put in some specialty channels to get certain results, things they often do on records recorded at Ocean Way. You have, in addition to unprocessed overheads and rooms, some COMPRESSED room or overhead channels done with either an 1176 or a Fairchild. They call these "Thwak". You can bring up just a little THWAK to give it that extra punch. It's done with the settings they use on albums though and it sounds ALBUM READY right out of the box like nothing I've heard before. With the preset options (and the way it is organized too which is SUPER easy and consistent for each kit because you have the same dry to wet to punchy presets made by them) you almost can't miss! Your track will sound like the drums were engineered by Allen Sides and Steven Miller!
There are also AMS RMX returns for the snares too and all sorts of extras in there. It's like an engineer's bag of tricks for getting different drum sounds. But at the end there's no sacrifice to having well recorded unprocessed multichannel drums for any engineer to mix and process however they wish. It's the best of both worlds in my opinion. It's a preset machine that's easy but it is ALSO an incredibly customizable drum product. You can also mix and match different elements of the kits to make your own kits ad infinitum.
As far as availability, it will be available for pre-order next month and shipping in November. Hopefully early November. The library version, if we end up doing it, is technically done and could be available in a couple of weeks.

Yes, they are presets and you have the captured HARDWARE sound of not only "any old" vintage outboard gear but the best hand picked tube microphone channels (there's not a mic used on this library that is newer than 1968... Ocean Way's mic cabinet is considered one of the best in the world), choice Fairchilds, Ueri, API and other gear tweaked out and customized for the best performance (proven on countless tracks recorded there from Paul McCartney to Kanye West) and on top of that it was recorded with a one of a kind console at Ocean Way in Studio B that has the most clarity on the top end than anything else out there. The best slew rate (which means the harmonics arrive at the same time vs. other slower consoles that technically smear the frequency range a little bit which results in subtle phase issues... that people like Allen Sides recognize more than any of us... which is why I love it that we have the top experts on hand... and I've learned a lot just working with them). George Massenburg called this Ocean Way console "the fastest board in the world". For those who know who he is and GML products I think that's a pretty credible source!algodon wrote:I can only judge from the sound of my tiny little Roland MA-8's that are hooked up to my internet computer, but yeah as far as I can tell, there's a fair amount of eq and compression, especially on the kicks, some gated toms, verb, etc.
I think we're bringing something really rare and great to musicians with this product. It's something that took a lot of effort and luck to get a studio AND the engineers of this caliber to do. If all goes well then there could be more down the pipe line. Everyone is really pleased with how it came out. In fact, they're already using it on records now! Remember they also wanted this made for their own use. That's always the secret ingredient "incentive" for people to go "over the top" such as having drums shipped from all over the world because Allen wanted SPECIFIC drum kits used on records made at Ocean Way over the past 10 years. We all benefit from this kind of personal passion and mission a producer/engineer/studio owner is on.
By the way, besides: http://www.oceanwaydrums.com You should also check out http://www.oceanwayrecording.com if you want to see pictures of legendary sessions over at Ocean Way over the years. Sinatra, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Nat King Cole, Dean Meartin, Sammy Davis, Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eric Clapton, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Eminem, Fiona Apple, Dido, Jellyfish, Michael Jackson (Thriller was even recorded there), Paul McCartnehy, Radionhead (their latest album was done there), Rush (latest album was mixed there), Greenday, Goo Goo Dolls, Barry White, Alanis Morisette, No Doubt, Jason Falkner, Jon Brion, Beck... the list goes on and on and on... look at the album slide show on the OW studio page. It's impressive!

Looking and sounding great Squids. Just finished listening on the OWD.com page. At the end of your last post you mentioned a "library version" as opposed to the full version. At the risk of sounding like an idiot, what would be the difference. I own Kontakt so is this something I might want to be aware of?

Yes, it would be a sound library in Kontakt format. But, I am not sure if we're going to do it yet. We might do the Silver Edition as a library perhaps and let people upgrade to the Silver, Gold or Platinum VI when it is out in November. I'll keep you posted. But all it requires is that you own Kontakt 2 to run if we do that. Another thing we might do is sell one downloadable K2 Ocean Way Drum Kit for a "test drive". Again, you'd be able to upgrade from there if you want more. Sound good guys?Rainman wrote:Looking and sounding great Squids. Just finished listening on the OWD.com page. I am watching the Ocean Way Drums Video DVD right now. We'll have this available soon for free (plus shipping unless you ask for it to be thrown in with your order at esoundz). It's really interesting! You've never seen such gear in your life!
This inside look is so cool. Allen explains what I was talking about with the console and everything. You see a history of the studio, photos of legendary sessions and albums recorded there... we've been working on this for 2 years and I am still blown away when I see what's been done at this studio. It's immense. Wait until you see some of these shots!
This is a gearhead's dream, this video... I am even seeing some things I've never seen before like the Ocean Way Mic cabinet all pulled out for a visual. Can you imagine having all of those mics? All working perfectly? I don't know if we project studio owners really "get it" that our new M149s are NICE but...
If you REALLY had the budget you'd want to record at Ocean Way.

Sounding real good, thanks Squids. I'm really interested in seeing the video you were mentioning. While I own my own project studio with some pretty decent mics from Nueman and AKG I always like to get out to a more commercial studio when budget allows to track drums and beds. If the group can do it, it's nice to do a bed live off the floor. What is curious however is that I'm finding that more and more, groups are either reluctant to do it or just don't have the chops. Ask them to cut a track without a click and many of them cringe. Is this a side effect of the technology we have today??

I don't know. It could be. It's never fun to play to a click but great drummers can do it. Young bands may not realize it's hard work to be able to play your instrument well (especially in the studio).
One interesting thing I am doing now is having not only acoustic kits in my studio but a full V-Drum kit running Ocean Way Drums. I am going to use this on Simon's album a little bit. We're also going to record some drums over at Genesis' studio The Farm too but even then I am going to SAMPLE the drums and set them up like we did with Ocean Way Drums so it triggers responding to nuances of the V-Drum kit. This way you can have the drummer play with his feel and if there's some adjustments to be made you can do it to the midi and have total control.
Now, granted, sometimes I like it more raw than that so I am always up for recording a real kit too. But for an album like Simon's I think precision and sounding modern (even futuristic) is important so I am sure we'll get a lot of use out of Ocean Way Drums on it. I am also meeting with Phil Collins to see if he wants to integrate it into his set up. Considering he's worked a lot with Allen Sides I think he's going to be really excited about this product. He knows what a great engineer Allen is obviously and also the sound of Ocean Way since he's recorded there.

By the way, the demos were done with the factory presets, no extra tweaking and no ambience or any effects added. That's just scratching the surface too. There are around a thousand presets. The Platinum Edition is on a 10,000 RPM HD and is 80 gigabytes. Price TBA. The Gold Edition for $995. MSRP is around 40 gigabytes and the Silver for $495. MSRP is around 10-20 gigabytes. (same price as the EWQLSO for comparison as I said before).

Drums...schmums...where's my SampleTron
The OWD demos sound seriously good but then again, that's what I expected. I've said it before and I'll say it again...Squids being the musician that he is, always produces a product that HE wants to use. He simply doesn't put it out there if he can't use it. So we all benefit from his musician/producer point of view.
Squids dude, you're doing it right...btw, I'll toot another horn here... from everything I can tell, ATJHE is the shizznit in the press. I can vouch for that. I loves me some AT2 but I cherish my ATJHE
And I ain't the only one it seems
I encourage everyone to jump on the upgrade while it's still around...and if you do, refer beergeek...I'm saving my epointz for SampleTron
