Go with Firewire.

I've used an 828mkII for over a year now on an XP laptop daisy-chained to a Glyph firewire drive and am very happy with it. Zero problems.

Just make sure your firewire port has the required TexasInstruments or Lucent firewire chipset.

I too have had good success with the firewire 828mkii for a few years now. The pres aren't too good though.
