Geting a Microphone to work through Cubase4?

Hey poeple having trouble geting the microphone to work in cubase 4 , it is hooked into a fireface400 , in cubase i select an audio track , and have the monitor button highlighted , but no signal , it will be to do with my connections and settings in the vst connections window.Ill need to add busses or shit like that but dont know which ones.When i click on add buss it comes up with a whole heap of shit like stero , mono , 5.0 5.1 , LRS and more but donw know what any of them mean.
