Can you try to recreate samples using other software other than the ones that were used to create the samples, or is it not a good idea ?
Im using Audacity and Im not even sure it can take the fxp format or whatever its called

OK - first of all, Im assuming you are talking about Simon Cann's "How To Make A Noise".
If so, then yes, you can recreate the patches that he made in the book with other synthesizers. Lots of free synths are capable of creating the sounds he talks about.
As for you, no, Audacity cannot be used for this, because it is an audio editor and not a host for plugins (of VST, RTAS or AU format - which use .fxp as means of saving presets). Get yourself Krystal, which is a free host/daw and some free synths, such as Oatmeal or Synth1 to start.

Nope I tired both your suggestions but it just takes me to sites where the links appear to be dead , are there any other freewares out there ?
I've got FL studio on trial but Im not familiar with lay out something simple and straightforward would be best.

Grab a copy of it in the downloads section. This should hold you pretty good while you learn the basics, and who knows, maybe you will even stick with it.

Here is Oatmeal: http://bicycle-for-slugs.org/ (click on Oatmeal at the bottom). There are much better skins and tons of presets floating around KVR for Oatmeal. The skins are really nice and if you bother to change it - it will look beautiful. I can't be arsed to look for it right now though
