I would really love to know how to make some of those great new dark techy ripping lead bass sounds like in Phace's Drum and Bass Arena podcast. (availible for free on iTunes, Drum and Bass Arena podcast section) not the sub sounds but the more "lead sounds" i know there is a few things to them like the LFO's and Filters, they almost sound like vocoders without the vocals. does anyone have any tips on how to make them or what gear would be good. I know probably a virus but are there any AUis (Audio Unit Instrument) or filter banks that are especially good for them. i am using a Mac with Logic 2.7. Thanx-gospel

Any sound samples to demonstrate?
I believe Phace makes neuro, correct? So then are you talking about the usual reece/hoover/wobble type of lead. Sound examples would really, really help.

Keys to DnB lead synths:

1. Fairly high resonance with an LP/HP filter applied, as well as an Env-Mod for the 'squelching/swelling' attack

2. 2-OSC synthesizer. Usually uses supersaws or filtered square synth.

3. If not a pass filter, use a talkbox/formant morph filter.

Synth1, Oatmeal and Atlantis are definitely capable of such sounds. :D

Thanx malice, it really does seem to be in the filters. They are really low sounds, as in played low on the keyboard and then are high passed or extremely cut with eq in the lows and then boosted in the highs. it also seems that they have alot of stereo spread to get them away from the drums and the subs. i have been having some good luck with the evoc filterbank. i will svheck out your recs.
xolax, i am unsure how to post sound examples that is why i pointed you in the direction of the podcast. which is free and is really interesting listening and of good sound quality. i am also unsure of the exact subdivisoin of dnb. but neuro sounds right. 3rdly i am also unsure of what the sound is called. it is LIKE a reesce but way more meanacing. it is not really a hoover, it kind of chudders or shudders and has odd rhythms, it is unlike any sound i have heard before, and i like it!-g

When you come up with a sound you like, sample it and load in that sample in a sampler. Then play with that sample. When you like it, sample it and load it into another sampler. Ad nauseum.

Resampling is key 8)

Chris-Yeah there is a great dnb tutorial on the Computer Music Magazine DVD (recent DnB issue) where that is demonstrated. definetly something i will have to try.

i think i figured out while driving today how some of the weirder sounds get made. i think the lfo's are not being synced at note on so some of the notes are catching the lfo in mid-sweep, cool.

j2j- yeah i think you are right. i have been playing with the FabFilter 2 demo and it is blowing me away. it really is a GREAT sounding synth. those filters are insane, and are better than some hardware VAs' filters. plus the demo is 30 day unlimited so you can actually get a feel for it with patch creation and listening to it in a song context. filters and sound processing are SO important.

anymore tips on dnb sound design would be appreciated, this is a good thread so far. thanx-gospel

There was a preset set loachm made for NI's Pro-53 synth. As far as I'm concerned, judging just from the MP3 demo, the sound's been nailed. :D

There's some great sounds on that mp3. Think I like the one that kicks in at 2:11 the most.
