ok, what it does is, that it takes the pre-recorded sound, chops it up in to pieces, and assigns all the pieces (grains) a key. Then when yo run other sound through it. It will then replace the sound in with the sound in the piece if it finds the key somewhere in the new waveform.
piece = grain.

and you can control the size of the grain, and the length of the key, and how many grains.

so the key's are there to help substitute a piece of sound in a new waveform with a piece of sound from another waveform :)

that was also a lot of rambling but might help a little?

Yesterday Najnaj caused (or maybe just acted as a catalyst for) a POOF-type Tracktion crash. Too bad, I was planning to use it as my DC plug of choice in the KVR contest song. I hadn't saved the song yet, but luckily Tracktion had an auto-save from right before I added Najnaj. :D

if you could recreate it I'm sure I could fix the bug.

so...you put some audio through it and it chops it into bits and what does assign it a key mean? does it do pitch detection on the grains to identify them, then use that info to find similar pitches in the new audio and replace them? or does it just assign a regular scale(key) to the grains and use that as a template to find similar sounds in the new audio?
so once you've recorded something, you have to save the recording as a preset?then load it on to another audio track to do the replacing etc?
am i getting close?
a record button would be better than a knob,hold down=record,mouse off=stop.

Post

key = identifier, has nothing to do with pitch or anything.

try it like this.

add najnaj to a track, record yourself whistling. sample that with the knob (yeah, a button would be better but I was in a bit of a hurry)

then talk or sing on that same track, and it fiddle with the knobs at the same time.

I guess I will have to do a video :)

hmm,i just get loads of crackly noise when i whistle, and loads more when i talk.
i did get some nice sounds on a synth track earlier, though.

try setting the legnth parameter higher

yeah, data length higher, make nicer craziness, endless looping flutes etc...i like it's unpredictableness, sweet insanity, you don't get much of that these days.reminds me of the terrifying/exciting times when a new tobybear creation would come out. :-o 8)
...i'm getting neverending loops which i can get i time with the speed knob.nice, sounds like early non.(i guess bpm sync would be good)
thanks for the help, good luck in the compo. :)

a video [no matter how lame] would definitely help boneheads like me..

Hi there,

thanks for taking the time to put together another character vst for us. I was playing around with Najnaj the other day on my MBP and was able to get some evil sounding drum loops. When I quit Tracktion I realized it had used up about about 800Mb of Ram. It also took a long time to quit. Since then Tracktion takes very long to start up and it eats memory like never before, even when I don't load a project.

Also I get this message in the console.log:

"Tracktion 3[637] CFLog (21): Attempt to load executable of a type that cannot be dynamically loaded for CFBundle 0x1efef90 </Library/Application Support/Font Cache Cleaner.app> (executable, not loaded)"

The Font Cache Cleaner.app is a PPC application that I'm sure I didn't put there. Can this be related to Najnaj or do I have to look elsewhere (I also tried hypercyclic in that same session)?

Greets,
Axl

I havent run it in tracktion 3 on a ppc, but I've run it in tracktion 2 on an intel machine. The letters used in NajNaj is a bitmap so it seams a bit strange to me that it should need to clean those up afterwards :)

Thanks for your reply. The problem might not be related to Najnaj at all. I was just thinking an out of control audio buffer could be responsible for the huge memory consumption. But I don't really know what I'm talking about. I have posted my question on the Tracktion forum. Maybe someone over there can help.

By the way, although I really like the style of Najnaj, there is one 'effect' that causes uncontrollably loud signals. It's located at about 2 O'clock on the fx knob.

though i'm still curious what algorithm it uses to compare data and where's your accent from btw?
