The synthiness can be decided if the programmer is willing to take the time and cheat the realistic 'slow warbling' that real human voices do. And yes, it's essentially a synth anyway it looks like.
Has this product even been announced on KVR?

Anything sounds more realistic in a foreign language. It is a very simple principle. If you do not know the correct pronounciation of a word, you would not spot the incorrect pronounciation. This is why the Japanese voices sound more realistic than the English voices to the western ear.
Another factor is simply that the Japanese language has less variations in pronounciation of a similar sound. English is very complicated in that there are too many different ways to pronounce the same thing, depending on the context where it is used.
The Japanese folks are generally also much more acceptable of new technology and they generally like to experiement with new ideas and new toys. The western world has a tendancy to discard new technology of it is not perfect yet. We tend to only considder using it once it is perfect and can replace a human upfront completely. There is no alternative for us. We tend not to think of using it as backup vocals or even just for the experiement and work towards improving it.

My friend just referred this to me. Holy crap, is that VOCALOID2?
I heard Sweet Ann's examples and they were....odd. But these sound pretty damned authentic. :O
This example is all sampled versions of Sweet Ann used in various ways:

Michael Kastrup: While that's a nice example of using Sweet Ann's voice there, it still sounds weird when using her as a lead singer. The examples I heard were from the myspace page of Sweet Ann...
Anyway.
Love the mix of that example.
Anyway.

i did a song with vocaloid1, if you want you can check it out at http://www.myspace.com/audioflanagan
'the cockroach' took less than an hour to program, the result is not awesome as far realism goes but i think if fits the song..
cheers
