My daughter (5) is very interested in music. She always comes to play on my PC when I'm working on something, but obviously it's not easy to get anything done that way!

So I'm looking for easy to use software with which she can play music (from the PC keyboard), assemble songs, etc.. Nothing too difficult, it must be fun. I bet she would like something with lots of flashy lights. :D

Any ideas?

I seem to have found some googling around :

Fleximusic Kids Composer
Sony Super Duper Music Looper

Any experience with those?

I'm still trying to find out what my daughter's been using at school. I still think this would be a great project for a freeware guru with a conscience... ;)

you can also try the redhat-based OLPC OS. it has some very child-friendly music software.

i remember i had some trouble finding the shutdown option so i used the reset button but then i found out what the command was (though i can't remember it so i'll get back to you :D)

i'd probably teach them mackie tracktion, step by step, get them going on something for adults... why let em settle for anything less :)

If you think of it, these are exciting times for children.
Until I was 12, the only instrument I could play, was blockflute (mandatory at school). :D
Now they can play a whole orchestra on their PC.

+ I think the dads are cooler too nowadays!

EDIT : Naah, my dad was cool too, he just wasn't into music like I am.

tunafish is marketed as "The easiest VSTi sequencer"

if anything it's easier than tracktion (which i still can't get my head around)

also the same guy coded HammerHead i believe... i think it was the best introduction to step sequencing ever!

my boy co-designed this little butey,it's midi only so you gotta connect a synth or drummachine to it.
he was about 4 when he started doing tunes(his band 'the prize' is in my sig),i found any fun vst's with big gui's used in eXT was good fun.
fleximusic is a good one, supadoopamusicloopa came with a bit of baggage,so i didn't like it,
really we ended up using eXT with plugins, step sequencers or playing keyboard and singing.i'd trim things a bit and try to get it to the right bpm, then add some more.
some times quantize, sometimes not.i'd let him make all the decisions do the lyrics, program the steps, play the synths, improvising was great fun.i had to be quick at setting things up or he would get bored or frustrated.
now he's 6 and really good with the mouse,he can use eXT quite well and sometimes finds shortcuts or functions that i didn't know!
he's even making his first synth in synthedit! i stay with him though,i wouldn't leave him on his own.it's surprising what they can do.

Hehe - my oldest (13) has played a lot with Reason. Kids find out how to use these things in no time, because they click everywhere anyway. :D
My 2,5 year old is having a blast with the Kaoss Pad, sampling his own voice and distorting it. I have to set it up with a couple of beats first, and then he pushes me away and starts laughing. :hihi:

Music balls from the dev chal, you just click on balls to get a groovebox going.

I started studying guitar at age 11, and I wouldn't waste any time not being challenged though.

You should try the Musicballs DJ from this year's DC. Awesome fun - kids should enjoy it.
