As for the Danelectro, the reviews I've seen for this guitar have been good ones. It's actually a fantastic quality guitar. Put together real well. This particular one retails for around $400 or so. But it's not cheap feeling or anything. I've actually heard others say that compared to their effects, their guitars are great. I've never had their effects, so it's hard to say. But I don't think this is a crap guitar by any stretch.

It's just not been my cup of tea in the time I've had it.

I like the look of the guitar, but that's another thing I don't know. What is the difference with a solid body and hollow body?

Also, when it comes to budget brands, is Epiphone better than Squier? Aren't they both made by the same companies as their older brothers, just with some differences? Outside of price, what is the differences?

If I were you I'd buy a Squier Deluxe Stratocaster; I play a Fender strat myself but Squier makes good guitars (once had one), often for sale for very low prices. What about this one?:

your best bet is to try both, it's hard for me to describe the difference in sound

here's the bottom line about squiers, epiphone and many, many asian guitars (most if not all tbh)...the building of these guitars are not done by the parent company, they are simply marketed and often designed by that company. The actual manufacturing is farmed out as contract work to the winning bidder. So it's very tough to judge what's really good when. The quality control might vary from one time to another fr more than with more expensive guitars. In fact it might even be the same people building several brands. Again why trying them is key...

what kind of amp are you playing this through? the amp and dial-in obviously have a lot to do with the tone. and you gotta remember, top 40 songs are recorded in the best acoustical atmosphere possible along with great engineers operating industry standard equipment.

Exactly what I was thinking... but I was thinking of a Jay Turser
JT-133. It's a lot like a Dot but 10x cheaper. Really nice PUs.

I'm recording into a Mackie Onyx Satellite into Amplitude DUO, Revalver MKII SE, and some various free sims. Oh, and the original Amplitude LE.

I have held off with a real amp because of living in my apartment. When my wife and I can afford a home, I will buy a real amp. But even if I bought one now, I couldn't play it without ticking off the neighbors.

I love the look of that guitar. If it sounds good, it may be an option. But like I said, until I free up the funds by selling my other guitar, I can't buy it yet. It's a good price as well.

oscar schmidt oe-30. semi-hollow body, which is a + for acoustic practice, helps to appreciate instrument. has imo standard guitar features :p humbuckers help reduce tone if you're not set on strat? tone.

the first fret on mine is too long (don't know if that's just a guitar thing i've never noticed) so i shaved a bit of hardwood down to extend the nut, works okay. tuning it properly (struggle) helps for satisfying playing.

And just in case, if anyone is interested in the Danelectro, let me know. Although I haven't decided to sell it yet, it would be good to know if anyone was interested. Full hardcover "old couch like" case included, everything in perfect condition. So yeah, just in case.

As for my suggestions - I disagree with you. The Cort KX-series are very versatile and would suit kookeys perfectly. They are made of mahogany, which sounds warm and smooth. When you add that with the coiltap, you get great cleans (which I have played and heard). The distortion is awesome as well, again due to the mahogany (plus the different tops if you get one - my friend has the one with a flame maple top which looks gorgeous). It has a set neck, with 24 frets, so it has a great playability. So all of ts's needs are covered and more. I strongly advise you to check them out.

I'm hoping to go a bit lower in price, but those Cort guitars look good. I can't seem to find them in any online retailers either though.
