I really like the Chamberlin horn sound that Tom Waits uses on the first track of Bone Machine (The Earth Died Screaming). I have M-Tron (which, obviously, is a Mellotron, not Chamberlin sound bank, although there are a few Chamberlin sounds on it) and none of the horn sounds come close, even I filter them. It sounds like a group of flugelhorns played softly, much softer and less brassy than any of the horns on M-tron. Does anyone have any idea how I can get a similar sound, or if there are samples of this Chamberlin sound somewhere?

The only Chamberlin sounds in the M-Tron tape banks are harp (2 of them) and female choir. So if it's horns you're after...not gonna happen on the M-Tron. David Bowie's Low album used a Chamberlin for the strings on some great songs...would be nice to have those also.

Hmm...looks like it also has Orchestron samples. Do you own that collection? They don't have a list of the samples, or how many multisamples per instrument there are. I'd really like a full sample set of the Orchestron vocals and violin.

Actually, on the right side of the page there's a link to browse all the samples. I kind of doubt there are any velocity layers or anything, since there was no velocity sensitivity on the Mellotron.

I'm not sure when SampleTron is going to be released but it sure looks like what you're looking for.

No, I don't have that collection. Squids did a group buy a few yrs back on his Tron samples. I could kick myself now for not getting in on that, but surely someone has it and could comment.

looking forward to Sampletron over here. the SR trons have served me very well in the meantime and i highly recommend them.

It's available again if you want it, as a collection or as the individual parts.

SampleTron is coming, and that will have a combination of the best of Squids Tron V1 and some new sounds, from the discussion on SR's forum.

i'm too lazy to check but definitely enough is sampled so as to not sound aliased. SR is good at knowing when to not oversample an instrument(or at least putting all their samples in a patch), i'm sure their newer stuff features larger patches since we all have better computers these days but the original libraries are very solid in balancing patch size vs. quality. with their history SampleTron will be a real treat.

Well, you'll get no closer to Tom Wait's Chamberlin sound than this... since I sampled Tom Wait's Chamberlin Music Master which I used to own and sold to him (so all of the Chamberlin stuff you hear on records from 1988 on from Tom were done with the same one I sampled for this).

Interestingly enough, Tom Waits now uses Squids Tron and eagerly awaits SampleTron to use for live performances. He called me up recently with his gravel voice and asked how to use it then finally went out to buy a computer specifically just to run SampleTank with Squids Tron Collection for a musical he was doing at the Wiltern in LA.

Cool huh?

Vintage keyboards is my thing. I've sampled gear from friends of mine that a lot of people are fans of like Jon Brion, Tom Waits, Roger Manning, Patrick Warren, Neil Finn and Mark Hart (of Crowded House) and I also owned some gear that belonged to artists that are famous for this stuff like Mike Pinder's Chamberlin m4. I actually owned that! Days of Future Passed. You gotta love LA in the late 80's when people were dumping these things because they were "obsolete". Replaced by FM synthesis and 12 bit samples! Haha.
