Hi,

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge but im new to all this, could sombody please tell me what the difference is between COMPAKT, KONTAKT, and INTAKT is, i know there samplers of some kind, but whats the difference, any tips..

kontakt is their flagship sampler

intakt is discontinued
it was a simplified version of kontakt that exploited the beat slicing engine + some basic fx

kompakt is discontinued
it was a simplified version of kontakt that i believe only used the standard sample playback + DFD/disk streaming engine + some basic fx

kontakt has all of the above modes plus some time stretching endgines and a lot of other extras

oh: intakt and kompakt are derived from kontakt 1.x

Yeah, Kompakt and Intakt are so outdated by the standards put forth in Kontakt 2 and 3. They also used to be used for large sample library developers to use as an interface for their libraries. But these days, they have been replaced by the Kontakt Player, now at version 2. The Player uses the same interface and shares some features with Kontakt itself.

Although Kontakt is infinitely more powerful than the player will show.

Kompakt was doomed form it's inability to play standard Kontakt files - otherwise it would've been a bonus for folks like myself who don't care to play around with the sampler internals and don't want a screen-hogger.

Kontakt doesn't have to take up much space. You can reduce it to just the main instrument controls, with or without a keyboard. So it is actually smaller than most instruments. Then if you want to do some editing, just hit the edit button. When you're done, just hit the reduce button again and it's back to being small.

I don't have Kontakt open right now, but I'm pretty sure you can reduce it to just show the performance view if you want. I haven't tried though.

Yes you can and I think (at least in K2) you can select between something like 3 screen resolutions, small, med and large.

Personally, I want GUIs to take up more room. Size matters

The only time I interface with the GUI is when I'm editing or creating presets/instruments. And when I'm doing that, I'm not interacting with the host at all, so I don't care if the GUI for the VSTi takes up the entire screen. My monitor pretty much requires I run at 1280 X 1024 and some of these GUIs are impossible to do fine adjustments on their controls are so small.

I'm well aware that you can shrink the interface. Only, you can't load any instruments once you've done that. Making it pretty much useless.
'Smaller than most instruments'? Which ones? I don't own any that big. Never have. Ozone is the largest one I've seen, and it's smaller. It's an incredibly bloated interface, compared to what it should be. My 2c.

When you shrink it to just the instrument, even with the keyboard, it's half the size of ozone. And you can load instruments that way, but they just have to be in the database. You never have to expand it as long as you've built your database with all your instruments in it. If you are experimenting with sounds, it's likely you'll want to access the editing functions.

That being said, Kontakt is infinitely more complex than many instruments are, and you have to put the controls somewhere. But when you don't need them, POOF, they're gone. Just a small little window to hold and load your instruments.

If you use the 'shrink' button, so that only the instrument remains, you can't load instruments. Perhaps you're not aware of the button I'm speaking of.
Either that or you can see some option I can't. There's no menus in that particular view.

Like I said, you can load instruments, just that they have to be in the database. It's the little downwards arrow to the left of the instrument name. You can't load just any instrument, but you can load instruments that have been scanned into the database.

I must've missed that - been playing around with the demo-
can you force it to come up in that view every time you load an instance?

I'm not sure. I don't know of any way to make it automatic because I've never tried it. But it's really just one button to make it all go small, so not TOO much of a hassle.
