I've been resisting this itch for more than a minute. Today I decided to finally scratch it! I went off and bought a fully loaded MPC 1000 [128M RAM / 80G HD]... after which I promptly sent $30 to the JJ OS folks.
I was in desperate need for change... something tactile, self-contained, and unable to access the internet!
This will a great experiment. I'm excited!

hey man, congrats on the purchase! i've been lusting over an mpc for quite a while now...maybe someday!

Not quite sure how to incorporate the two as there is quite a bit of overlap, but there are definitely features unique to both. It can slice+automap, layer samples, and handle track mutes in a live setting. Those features alone make it worthwhile for my purposes (also the fact that it can't do anything else... like a laptop where I distract myself constantly). It will take some noodling. Initial plan is to come to terms with the it's sequencer. Learn it inside and out. Just messing around so far I really like it. It's this hands on thing. Renoise is about the most hands on host I've encountered. This takes that hands on thing up another notch.
Now I gotta sell some stuff to pay for it.

that's precisely what I was doing last night while loading it up with samples form the pc! 
So far, the OS has been very easy to come to grips with... the only negative thus far is that I don't care for the pads. You have to hit them pretty hard, and at times I get this weird sorta double trigger. It's not a particular pad that does it. Could it be the way I'm hitting them? Anyone else encounter this?
I ended up going to the pad settings and adjusting them to max sensitivity, but they are still too hard imo. I think the padKontrol pads are much nicer, and really smooth to the touch. So maybe I'll have to plug in the padKontrol into the MPC.

I have a 500 rather than a 1000, and I think the 500 has a different pad construction, but I found after a little while that the pads softened up a bit. Similarly, I had double trigger problems early on that I don't seem to have any more, possibly they're a side effect of the pad stiffness?
