Electronic Controller drums

I got a lovely mail from Roland telling me about their new technologies, and at the top of the list was the new HD-1 http://www.roland.co.uk/drum_room_catdet.asp?id=HD1

My question is this: is there any equipment out there I could replace the crappy HD-1 unit with which processes multiple drum triggers but is also able to sample/arrange your own kits?

I'm trying to find a cheap way of satisfying a friends drumming desires without him having to use a computer to manage it all.

Do I live in the real world?
