Hi all,

Just came across this really cool site with loads of free, high quality sounds and thought I'd share it with you.
The site is soundsnap.com and it features thousands of sounds and samples generated entirely by its users. You can download and upload sounds and use them in whatever way you fancy, private or commercial, as all material on the site is royalty free. I've found it really useful for finding specific sounds for some of my tracks.

----Not be a downer, but that site offers very little in the way of information about who they are, and *if* at all anyone is checking the samples for copyright. In other words, it seems too good to be true and most likely is, for that stuff to be used legally commerically. I don't suppose Mr. 1 post who brought the site to our attention can shed some light about that ?

I wouldn't download any samples from any of those sites, one uncleared sample could end a career before it began, no joke. *shrug*

Well, you'd obviously just contact the uploader to clarify copyright ownership. Like YouTube, SoundSnap is for social networking as well. If an uploader tells you that he or she owns the sample, then you can use it. The thing is this, on both YouTube and SoundSnap everything is copyrighted. Because of that you might have to take extra steps to understand what you are using in your own productions, regardless of the license that's granted outright. One doesn't have to use a sample without first making contact with the uploader to make sure the material is legit. There's nothing to fear. Just be smart about it.

Additionally, folks here upload samples and patches all the time. And people use them without hesitation, and without additional inquiry into the copyright ownership of the material. Here at KVR this happens, which also happens to be a site that's tolerant to some extent of those who infringe copyright. A community where pirates and copyright owners hash out their differences in order to build mutually beneficial relationships. SoundSnap, YouTube, and KVR are very similar in this regard.

The best thing to do when joining a site like SoundSnap is to recognize that one is joining a community. Get to know people and you reduce the chance of using unlicensed material. The site is credible even though some of its members may not be.

Sounds like a nice idea but it does seem that any time a new sample site is recommended here - the content is ignored and the witchhunt begins? I say this as quite new to kvraudio though having worked for years in the music and jingle/voiceover areas.

Actually, I might be considered a principled 'pirate' ie. I no longer believe in 'intellectual property' because I realized it automatically violates real, private property - which I do believe in.

If some people had their way there would come a day when surveillance cameras with recording devices and all phone conversations will be constantly monitored in case 'pirates' whistle or hum a popular tune - because it still 'belongs' to the one who wrote it.

Actually I think the differences are being hashed out by the market - the millions, young and old, who are freely sharing the files on their own computers. The smart independent bands and musicians are serving those people, not trying to control them. Changing their business model, not the market.

----Well, no offense, but that doesn't even make sense, so whatever.
----I only know one thing about legal matters, and it's the only thing that matters: I cannot afford a lawyer, but the RIAA (and all other companies of the like) can, so meanwhile, if I want to release anything or get it placed, it will not contain a single snare hit that I didn't record or pay & have a receipt for. If I get sued, I'll be smiling all the way, cause I will walk out unscathed, with free advertising for my name, and I will win any case against me. And meanwhile, think of all the time I saved not trudging through 8 zillion crappy "free" samples ha-ha.
