Can you do the following in either Emulator X2, Sample Tank, Halion, or Kontakt (or any other software sampler)?

Trigger a layer or modulator on "Key Off" events
Trigger a layer or modulator on "Aftertouch" events
Trigger mono / poly mode based on time between Key On events
Trigger a sample when the foot pedal is pressed?
Trigger a layer / modulator when the foot pedal is pressed?
Organise presets in standard MIDI banks, using standard MIDI bank and program numbers?

I've thought about creating a chart that people could contribute to: What features are available on what softsamplers\romplers.

As for your questions, I only know that Kontakt lets you create groups that can be triggered by various modulators, including the sustain pedal.

Do you know if kontakt can organize programs in different banks, and change banks by MSB or LSB bank select messages?

In Kontakt, you create a multi that holds several instruments. You can then switch between them using the midi keyboard, but I'm not sure if it's by using MSB or LSB messages.

Halion manages banks in an esay way

Just load various instruments then save them as a .fxb

You can also trigger a layer or a folder of layers by key off

For aftertouch you can link aftertouch to the volume of a layer or a folder of layers, but I think you cant use it as a switch to trigg a layer as aftertouch is not a boolean operator (yes-no) but a continuous controller with 127 possible values. But you can trigger a modulator in a standard way.

Pedal can be used as a swith though. As modulation wheel or any controller ( play X folder is mw is beetween 0-60 and Y folder if above 60 aso ....)

Switch beetween mono-poly in regard of time beetween two successive notes cant be achieved imo. Maybe someone else can tell more about that but I've never seen or heard of this function.

Hope this helps

I only know Kontakt2, so..

Trigger a layer or modulator on "Key Off" events
yep

Trigger a layer or modulator on "Aftertouch" events
probably, using scripting

Trigger mono / poly mode based on time between Key On events
?

Trigger a sample when the foot pedal is pressed?
probably, using scripting

Organise presets in standard MIDI banks, using standard MIDI bank and program numbers?
i tink so. I don't understand your usage of "Standard", but you can create instrument banks which contain autonomous instruments, which I believe can be changed with ProgChange messages.

Standard MIDI banks work like this:
Each bank can consist of 128 programs
You have two controllers for selecting banks, Controller 0 and Controller 32, This gives you up to 16,384 banks to assign 128 programs to. GM2, GS, GS2, and XG all have the standard GM compliant set of programs on Bank 0, then they have variations and extended programs throughout other banks. I'm trying to figure out a way to create an XG compliant PC sampler based library with high quality porgrams. And I want to use that as a sound module to use with my keyboards and workstations.

Lotuzia, thank you for your reply. Can you send a Bank Select MIDI message into Halion and have it load up a bank of sounds? For instance Controller 0 Sends 112, Controller 32 sends 8 and Program Change sends 11, This brings up sound 11 in bank number 14344? ((MSB*128)+LSB)

Emulator X2 can do ALL except - Trigger mono / poly mode based on time between Key On events

Does this question, and the responses, mean that a user- editable chart of features might be a good idea--a list of programs on the X axis and a list of features on the Y axis? But I don't know where to start--is there a way to host this, with people able to enter a feature and a program and a checkmark to indicate that a control\mod\feature is included, and a way to to make additional notes about the features (limitations, caveats, etc)? Something like a ListPro chart (which lets you enter notes at the bottom of the page for each item), but on the web?

I can't do this on my own, but I'd be more than willing to contribute information, if there was a place to host.

So far I've gathered this (please correct me if I'm wrong)

Kontakt supports only 128 programs.

Emulator X supports 16,384 banks with 128 programs each

Gigastudio supports 16,384 banks with 128 programs each

Halion supports only 128 programs, but I know that Hypersonic uses the Halion engine, and Hypersonic uses a directory structure of the bank files and respond to bank and program change messages to load those banks, so maybe it is possible to use hypersonic and switch all the banks out?

SF2 supports 16,384 banks with 128 programs each

Gigastudio, Halion, Kontakt all support those trigger modes I asked for, Emulator X as stated could do all except the mono/poly based switching, and SF2 only have very basic triggers.

Hi

Had a little search on the manual.

Dont think that Halion can perform remote banks loading. :?

I dont use this but could be helpful for live perf though.

I use Emulator X v1.52 (not 2) and unless I've missed something it requires... workarounds... to get modulator trigger of samples going (REtrigger is easy, and is the starting point for my method). If X2 has it, I'm very pleased to hear that.

I think it's probably possible to do something vaguely resembling mono/poly control based on the poly key timer and channel ramp modulators, even in X1. It wouldn't technically switch key modes, but the envelope times can be controlled over their full range by any modulator, and there's a switch processor that you can run a modulator through...
