I have a machine dedicated to ardour, that I use often. What do you need to know?

Article in Sound On Sound about a commercial studio using Ardour:

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb04/a ... rimage.htm

It's a few years old but should give you an idea.

Just installed Ubuntu 7.10 and got the Ardour package yesterday.
I've got some remix jobs coming up, I'm going to try Ardour for a project.
I have to say I like the GUI; it's clean and well-thought out.
I installed the Libfreebob thing, so I guess it should work with my MOTU Travelller. If not I'll use my Digigram VX.

@Robert: BTW, any tips how to learn Ardour? I've never used Protools so the software paradigm totally escapes me.. The regions etc.. Can you compare A to P or are they totally different beats?

Ardour is the great example of what I hate in linux apps...
Linux developers build a very GOOD basic, but don't FINISH it.
And I am so sad, see Muse, the sequencer that was the closest to Cubase/Logic in the 90s. What if they had continued it, and sell for $5?
They would be faaaar in developement. But no. They must keep open source and free and they finally notice that they didn't get anywhere. Almost nobody knows the app.

I have checked this app, it's nothing more than an audio sequencer with basic features.
But Ardour is at least still not finished. Midi was promised one year ago.
Let's look forward what will happen, I really belive in this app. (But I'd happier if Muse continued.. :D)

Sorry if a little off-topic but -

In the new issue of Keyboard magazine, there was mention of a future native OS X version for those who need more bang than GarageBand can give, but are lacking the funds needed for Logic. Also, courtesy of Google's Summer of Code (an annual event to assist developers and their projects), MIDI features are planned to be implemented in this mostly audio-only application.

I use it for audio mix down at the moment, and it works great for that.
The next update will implement midi features, I've seen screenshots of it and it looks great.

i don't really view midi as a neccessity. with jack it's easy enough to use seq24 for midi while using ardour for recording. at least that's my preference.

Go grab an irc client and hop on freenode. Get on #ardour and ask questions. You will know the program inside and out in a good day of asking questions.

Ardour and protools are very similar. Ardour is significantly more flexible though, especially once you master jack... jack is amazing. Imagine a fully "open" (anything to anything, anywhere, properly slaved) rewire with the routing capabilities of a large hardware mixer and patchbay. That's what jack is.

There is already a working binary for OS X. You just need to install X11 from your OSX disk that came with your mac. I have ardouyr on my mac and often use it to work on projects at the coffee shop etc..

Native just means that it will not require X11 any further. Difference is quite minor to the average user.

Have you looked at ardour in the last year or so? It's been making a lot of advancements, and midi is almost finished (svn has 'working' midi builds for you).

Ardour only needs to be basic due to the paradigm revolving around the use of Jack. It does way more than it needs to, and there are many more features coming.. the developers are constantly working on things. The development of ardour easily rivals that of the quicker and more responsive commercial developers right now, I am open to being proven wrong if you disagree.

nope, you werent wrong. you got it bang on. :)

Opensource needs a paradigm shift.. "0.99.1" and "1.22.9" for instance, combine that with SVNs.. Then again, there's no Golden Premium+ 2007 -releases.. *shrughs*

@Robert - I've been toying with Jack for some time but 'how to save projects' escapes me.
