I've been thinking about picking up a hw midi seq lately, for various reasons.
It seems like it's a very powerful one, with lots of in depth feature for groove, quantization, arrangement etc...
I'm mostly wondering about the user experience kinda thing, as i've always been software based, and will most likely use it with softsynths, and use a daw for arranging in the end.
Is there a lot of menu switching/nesting, having to stop the playback for all sorts of operations etc ?
I'm also wondering if it allows to modify some of its paramaeters through midi (sent TO it), not sure exactly which ones, just leave some room for experimentation.
There's also the rm1x which looks basically like a live oriented version of the qy, though dumbed down a little, and i'm afraid i might miss out on some of the features they left out (some groove stuff, chords apparently).
Anyway, anyone used, or better, still use one would care to comment ?

I used to oown a QY700, a good few years ago, before going software based and buying Cubase 3.7 (showing my age,
) . If you are looking for a hardware sequencer then you don't really need to look any further. It's rock solid and very straightforward to use. In fact it probably owes a lot to the likes of Cubase as the arrange window is set-out in linear time fashion with tracks down the vertical axis. Copying and pasting was easy, from what I can recall, and the big screen made it a pleasure to use. A lot of the functions were accessed via soft adjacent to the LCD screen which made for a good user experience. If I were in the market for a hardware sequencer I would have no hesitation buying another Qy700. It's a beast.

ever tried the rm1x too by any chance ?
i was also wondering, since it does seem the qy-700 got some influence from the 'daws' of its time, doesn't it feel a bit like a cubase in a box ? i'm more looking for a shift of perspective in the way i compose, rather than just a hands on experience.

If you're looking for a different perspective thats a difficult one !! I have only had a very brief play with the RM1x but found it confusing to program because of the small screen size. I got the impression it was a cut down QY700 with a dance/contemporary sound set as opposed to AWM2 GM set that comes with the QY700. If you're biased in favour of a box with modern dance/techno/electronic sounds out-of-the-box then the QY700 will disappoint. On the other hand, if you are looking for a rock solid sequencer with chord/stye arranger built in then the QY is the one I'd go for. If you're used to the cubase way of sequencing then some elements on the QY are going to be similar, however, you will probably find yourself doing things in a different way through necessity. I think the only way that you will really find out is by trying each unit out, however, the decider may come down to cost. I've seen RM1x's going for GBP£150 (c. $300). On the other hand, the QY 700 seems to retain its value. The cheapest I have seen was about £350, most have been higher in price.
I must admit, I was tempted to buy a S/H RM1x just for fun.
